I bought this reluctantly because I don't like buying biographies of people who are still alive and active and quite some time has passed since the writing of this book so it is a bit dated. However it proved to be an interesting and inciteful read.
The problem is, the writer is obviously a big fan of Phil. This is not a crime but it does mean that any negative facts about the balding, whiney scumbag are brushed over very quickly. Other times the author tries to justify the arrogant bean head's short temper and violent tendencies by simply suggesting he is stressed because of his work. The writer is just a little too loyal to this pompous, pretentious, hypocritical swine.
I enjoy Phils work very much and I think he is one of the last great pop artists but the information on the music and the writing of the music is hardly a revelation and does not reveal a lot about meanings of songs aside from the fact that the annoying git finds it hard to get over his wives who he repeatedly neglects or is unfaithful to.
The insights into his personal life are where the book gets interesting. It says a lot about him that he released an entire album whingeing about how his wife cheated, then cheated on his second wife. It paints the picture of a very troubled man... who is also a meat-headed, slimeball with no respect for other musicians. The book also covers friendships with other big names like Eric Clapton (the incredibly talented fascist turd) who provide interviews concerning Phil. It covers some of his work with Genesis in which he slags off the other band members but it is worth reading for this kind of information.
To conclude: Phil is scum, the book is good in places but overall not incredible.
