From Amazon.co.uk

Italian horror maestro Dario Argento made his name by turning homicide into modern art with a cinematic flourish, but with Phenomena he takes his stylish mayhem in new directions. The film opens with the dreamy grace of a fairy tale: a young girl wandering the green meadows of Switzerland and discovering a gingerbread house, wherein lives a monster more modern than mythic, a psychopathic maniac who plunges the picture into a lush nightmare. Jennifer (Jennifer Connelly in her first starring role), a gifted young girl at a Swiss school, has a psychic link to the insect world and develops a connection with the killer through midnight sleepwalks. With the help of a lonely, wheelchair-bound entomologist (genre stalwart Donald Pleasence, who inflects his sonorous tenor with a gentle Scottish burr) she turns telekinetic detective, which only draws her closer to the killer's lair. The densely plotted story becomes muddled at times (this is the busiest film in Argento's oeuvre) but the lyrical cinematography and gorgeous nocturnal imagery--dreamy sleepwalks, nightmarish murders, hideous horrors that emerge in the dark of night--take on a poetic elegance not seen in his previous work, providing the tale with a kind of dream logic. This is a slasher film reborn as an exquisitely grim fantasy: Jennifer in Argentoland. --Sean Axmaker

4.0 out of 5 stars Argento at his maddest, great entertainment 28 April 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
For me this is Dario Argento's most overlooked, underrated film. The plot skeleton - young girl adrift in a foreign school whilst a murderer wreaks havoc - is obviously Suspiria, but, incredibly, this film makes that effort look almost conventional. Some of the scenes in the final 20 minutes are genuinely unbelievable - swarms of insects, homicidal chimpanzees, an unforgettable face, Iron Maiden, extreme violence and a certain young future Oscar winner looking on with unfeigned bewilderment - whats not to love!
The Anchor Bay Region 1 disc is recommended. Check out the Bill Wyman video on the extras - bet he would shudder to see this now!

Watching this movie again was like meeting an old friend. Ok Dario Argento doesn't make perfect movies but a handful (including this) offer the viewer a rare feast of exceptional imagery and bold soundtrack.

This original version of the film is much more satisfying than the edited version previously available as 'Creepers' and the picture quality is fantastic.

If you are thinking about buying this movie I can happily recommend it as one of Argento's top four.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmnn Ok Then.......... 25 Feb 2006
Format:DVD
First things first......the sleeve displayed above ISNT the sleeve that you get, the one you do get is TERRIBLE...its a plain white with text affair thats a real dissapointment.

The movie is none too bad though it is a 4:3 Pan & Scan print..

On the upside all/most of the deleted stuff from "Creepers" is in this print and the transfer is passable....

What else can you say about Argento movies you either like them or you dont..and this one isnt his best....leaning towards a more supernatural story than the Giallo that the sleeve proclaims.

It wont win Argento any new fans...but thats not the point....more to the point is that it`s available at all....ah well not perfect but an improvement on the version of "Creepers" that was released over here previously.

Worth getting for less than a fiver........
