Product Description

Product Description

Proposed changes in practice legislation will allow podiatrists to prescribe a limited range of drugs and dressings. It is therefore now imperative that students and practitioners understand pharmacology. Not only the mechanisms of action of drugs, but also their potential side–effects and interactions with other drugs taken by the patient.

This book will cover both basic and clinical pharmacology. The podiatrist′s role in examination, assessment and diagnosis are considered.

First Sentence
The word pharmacology is derived from the Greek word pharmakon which means drug, and so the science of pharmacology is the study of the effects of biologically active chemicals (drugs) on living systems, cells, cell membranes and enzymes. Read the first page

Fit for purpose 16 April 2009

Format:Paperback
The first review is too drastic in its condemnation of this work. This a book which does not purport to be anything other than 'an introduction' to a difficult subject at an appropriate level for undergraduates who may never have approached the study of pharmacology before. After digesting it, then some people may be prompted to move on to other publications to increase their knowledge, but if not they will at least have an improved understanding of a complex science. It is a little expensive compared to its peers however.

Give it a miss 12 Jan 2005

Save your money and buy a decent pharmacology text. Try Rang Dale and Ritter.
This book is sadly lacking in detail, which may be good if it sufficed as an introduction to pharmacology for podiatrists, but it doesn't even do that. The diagrams are verging on useless and the information on specific drug actions is lacking.
It makes a relatively tough subject harder to follow.
If you want an introduction to pharmacology try Mediacal Pharmacology at a Glance.

I was a little apprehensive about getting this book, as it was not on the recommended book list from lecturers. It is however very interesting as it gives the reader a background to the podiatry profession and why we need to learn about pharmacology. The book is easy to read and understand and offers excellent illustrations and simple explanations, a help when trying to understand the complex 'world' of pharmacology.

I would recommend all podiatry students of year 2 onwards to buy this book as a supplement to a more in depth pharmacology book.
