The thoroughly updated Third Edition of this acclaimed reference covers all aspects of pharmacology and physiology that are relevant to perioperative anesthetic management of patients. Tailored specifically to anesthesiologists' needs, the book provides the current information on drugs and organ functions that is essential for clinical decision-making. The Pharmacology section is organized by drug class and presents key facts on available agents, mechanisms of action, doses, benefits, risks, and drug interactions. The Physiology section, arranged by body system, explains how normal and abnormal body functions impact anesthetic management. This edition includes information on recently introduced and future drugs, new findings on uses and side effects of established agents, and new concepts on organ functions. Complementing the text are more than 600 diagrams--over 100 new to this edition--that clarify chemical structures, drug-induced responses, and physiologic mechanisms. More than 150 tables and a concise drug index are also included

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Basic Information 9 Jan 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of this book, as I have high expectations of a book from Dr. Stoelting. However, I found that this book contains only basic information. It is good for a quick reference, but if you are looking for in-depth information about a specific topic, you will have to look elsewhere.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book is frustrating, but unfortunately necessary 27 July 2005
By Hippocrates - Published on Amazon.com
I have used this book over the last 9-12 months to study for my part I ANZCA exam. It is frustrating to use at times, often containing contradictory or imprecise statements. It definately contains several errors (including but not limited to the structures of sevoflurane and etidocaine). It is now becomming rather out of date (examiners often expect more up to date information than this). The chapters and sections themselves are well organised, but within paragraphs organisation is often a bit lacking.

Also, the physiology section is not particularly usefull, being too brief to be worthwhile in studying for exams.

Unfortunately I do not know of any other book dedicated to anaesthetic pharmacology that covers the topics in the appropriate amount of detail without being too massive to be managable. So we will still be forced to use it for now. Let's hope a new edition comes out soon that is much improved!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic book by Dr. Stoelting! 28 Mar 2004
By Griggsby Wright, MD - Published on Amazon.com
I must agree with Dr. Alqasaim; this book is excellent. Diagrams are well-done, as are the chapters - en tota.

The book has two distinct sections. The first half of the book is dedicated to the subject of pharmachology, and the second, physiology. This is not a large broad-based text.

Additionally, this is not a book to take the place of the old basic science "stand-by's" like Goodman & Gilman's, or Guyton. However, this book is highly useful for review in those aforesaid subjects, as related to the practice of Anesthesiology.

Absolutely well thought-out and executed.

A must-have for your home/office medical library.
