Phantom Punch 26 Jan 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I found this film entertaing enough because Ving Rhames played Sonny Liston and Stacy Dash played his wife and both actors did a fine job.
The problem i have with the movie is simple. Did it portray the character truthfully or was it mainly wishful thinking. The record books show that Sonny battered the then heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson twice. So why did he get beaten by the younger Cassius Clay and in the second bout in 1965 by this so called phantom punch. It's the title of the film yet it does not even explore this.
The mystery still exists and as Sonny never talked about it, it never will be solved. He died in 1971 and his death was another mystery.
The film was so matter of fact that it can only be described as a sporting drama. Heavyweight boxing in the 60s was plagued by problems. Racism, mob influences, corruption and so on. It was a difficult period. This film touched on some of that aswell as Sonny's problems with the law. How accurate was the portrayal?
The reality is quite sad so maybe this film was a mistake in the pursuit of entertainment.
Extras include some text pages about heavyweight champions. I would have liked some interviews maybe explaining why this film was made.

Never a dull moment - terrific acting 2 Mar 2010
By Dee J. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
I had the chance to watch an advance screening of this film and am looking forward to owning the DVD to see it again. I was pleasantly surprised how great the acting was; Ving Rhames is terrific as Sonny L. Probably my favorite performance, though, was from Nicholas Turturro, who could give Joe Pesci a run for his money! At times, I had to remember that I wasn't watching a documentary (although I'm sure director Robert Townsend took a few liberties!)

With the language and occasional violence, obviously this is a film for adults. Highly recommended!

A Must See 15 Jan 2012

If you are a boxing fan and if you care to know about the racial struggles of another black man see this movie. Bravo Robert Townsend you did and excellent job of directing this film and I'm just sorry I just viewed it. The story line, the acting, and the cinematography was ALL excellent. The fact that the story is true! I was definitely a Mohammad Ali fan, but I found myself rooting for Listen. I am a collector of movies and this ones now one of the top on my list. Excellent!

Ving Rhames is terrific as Sonny Liston 6 April 2011
By Frank Scoblete - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Blu-ray
Ving Rhames is Sonny Liston in a fascinating story of one of the most hated boxers of all time. If you know little about Liston this film will fill in the blanks.
