The Super Furries return with a canny remix album of last years chart worrier ‘Phantom Power’, initially accompanied by a bonus EP. Essentially the same selection as appeared on the remix portion of the DVD version, give or take a track here or there, ‘Phantom Phorce’ offers some quite interesting reworkings by a formidable cast of remixers – Wauvenfold, High Llamas and Force Unknown to name a few. The profile of the remixers varies from underground to well known, but for the most part the standard of their work is consistently high – to the extent where some are on the verge of surpassing the originals. Mario Caldato Jr’s excellent flute based interpretation of ‘Liberty Belle’ is particularly successful, as is Weevil’s take on ‘Hello Sunshine’. Some tracks, such as Freiband’s attempt at the same song, and Kila Kela’s human beatbox version of ‘Golden Retriever’ are quite radical (or awful, depending on your opinion), and may repulse fans of the originals. As for Wauvenfold’s ‘Sex, War and Robots’, the less said about it the better. But for the most part the remixes successfully manage to bear some resemblance to the originals whilst concentrating on previously obscured aspects of the songs and introducing interesting new dimensions, and Gruff’s voice is handled quite well throughout.
The order of the tracks also remains quite faithful to the original album, and all this, you might think, might add up to an interesting companion – or even alternative – to the album itself. However this album is blighted – ruined!

as you'd expect a remix album 15 April 2004

good, but if your fond of the originals, it just doesn't have the same effect. don't get me wrong, i was neither upset or offended by any of the remixes (which is usually the case with remixes of classics), some were actuily an interesting interpretation -even enjoyable! but no phantom power!!
