Product Description

Directed by Rupert Julian, and based on a novel by Gaston Leroux, classic horror masterpiece The Phantom of the Opera stars Lon Chaney, in one of his most grotesque performances as the crazed man without a face, who lives in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera, and falls in love with the voice of a young opera singer. Infatuated, he kidnaps her, dragging her to the depths below where she will sing only for him.

This 2-disc Ultimate Edition includes an all-new HD restoration of the film, with the Bal Masque sequence in two-strip Technicolor and other scenes hand tinted, and features both the 1925 and 1929 versions. It also includes a brand new score by The Alloy Orchestra, in addition to Gaylord Carter s famous 1974 score released for the very first time in stereo and Gabriel Thibaudeau s 1990 score. Together with new audio commentary by Dr. Jon Mirsalis, this edition features the following extras:</p.

  • Still Frame Gallery
  • Original Trailers
  • Interview with Gabriel Thibaudeau
  • Reproduction of the 1925 Souvenir Programme and Script

5.0 out of 5 stars Great presentation of a the Lon Chaney Classic 20 Dec 2011
Having had the old Eureka version for many years, which I always thought was good, I was a bit apprehensive about spending the money on the Blu Ray. After all this is a silent film from 1929 and I would not have thought it could be improved that much. But I was wrong. Yes, the film elements show their age but the definition and clarity is superb. The technicolor sequences hand recreated look good. Not sure what the other reviewer felt was wrong with three versions of the film and numerous scores but I am more than pleased. Lovely packaging and superb content.

I spent several hours moving back and forth between the Blu-ray
edition and the Milestone DVD Ultimate edition (2003).
The picture clarity and the quality of the tinting
is very much improved in the Blu-ray version-the Bal Masque sequence is stunning!
However, why is the Blu-ray version presented in a 1.2:1 format,
while, according to IMDb, the film was shot in 1.33:1 ?
The extras in the Blu-ray version pale in comparison to those in the
Milestone edition. And you need a computer in order to view the
original script and the souvenir program, as they are in a pdf form!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic looking Blu ray, considering, 24 April 2012

I bought this BluRay not expecting too much in the hi def stakes, but was pleasently surprised. Someone has taken alot of time & energy (& money) in doing the best job possible on restoring this masterpiece, & it shows. There are even little bits added to this version which I have never seen before. Perhaps it was too much to think Universal would put the sound version as an additional feature on this classic, but nevertheless, fans will not be disappointed. Dear Universal, please restore Lugosi's Dracula & Karloff's Frankenstein to a Hi-def masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOR A FILM 88 YEARS OLD 8 Jan 2013
FIRST OF ALL THIS IS A BLU RAY & DVD COMBINATION.
BLU RAY HAS THE ORIGINAL 1925 VERSION 78 MINUTES LONG WITH A CHOICE OF 2 INSTRUMENTAL SOUNDTRACK IN LINEAR PCM STEREO . ALSO THE 1929 VERSION 91 MINUTES LONG WITH A CHOICE OF INSTRUMENTAL OR COMMENTARY SOUNDTRACK IN LINEAR PCM STEREO. THERE IS ALSO A 13 MINUTE PHOTO GALLERY.
RECORDED IN 4¦3 SCREEN RESOLUTION
SO EVEN ON A FULL SCREEN TV YOU WILL ONLY GET A 4¦3 PICTURE

THE DVD CONTAINS DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO & A 114 MINUTE VERSION OF THE FILM WITH A PIANO VERSION SOUNDTRACK . YOU GET THE ORIGINAL TRAILER - AND SOMETHING ELSE THAT YOU NEED A CD ROM DRIVE TO ACTIVATE. THE PICTURE IS FULL SCREEN WITH A SMALL BLACK BOARDER ALL THE WAY ROUND IT.

VERY GOOD ENJOYABLE BLU RAY & DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is This Region-Free? 12 Oct 2012
Thia is not really a review, but a query. I'm in the US. This looks like a very nice version of the film (both the '25 & '29 versions, in fact) & appears to be superior to the Blu-ray available in the US. The product information does not say what region the disc is - does anyone know if it is region-free?

1.0 out of 5 stars not that ultimate!! 12 Dec 2011

This is a very poor presentation of a classic. No mention on the cover as to what is on each disk - which would tell you just how rubbish this offering is!!! 2 versions of the 1929 version on disk1 and the worst looking 1925 version on 2nd disk. This does not even fit the screen top to bottom. As for extras - not even worth a mention. Why 2 disks for this???

There are at least another 2 versions to come on Bluray and i doubt if any will be better than the previous DVD outings.
