Just finished The Phantom and still wondering about the ending!! Had to read it a couple of times. Is Harry Hole dead or alive? At first reading he appears to be shot dead, but another careful look tells you there is a faint heart beat! will he make a comeback or is that the end of the series?
Perhaps the author has a new character in mind, never can be another Harry - We were lead into a false sense of security with the expensive suit, good living for 3 years - no drink or drugs. The Rat did detect a heart beat if I am not mistaken.
There is a recent interview with Jo Nesbo on YouTube (search Random House Australia Jo Nesbo at the 5:45 mark in the long interview--correction from earlier post) where he implies he is alive. Earlier interviews with the author implied he was dead.
I went to a Jo Nesbo appearance at Waterstones in Piccadilly on Monday (23.07.12). The interviewer asked him what his publishers would say when he presented them with the last Harry Hole novel. Jo responded that wouldn't happen just yet as he still has some plans for Harry. And relax.
I also know why the assassin in The Redeemer has crushed urinal blocks in his pockets!
At first Jo couldn't remember! After some thought he said that the smell of urinal blocks reminds Stankic of freedom, although it doesn't stem from an event in Stankic's own past but from Jo's, so this is why there is no reference in the novel: Jo always felt he was in a rush to get anywhere, particularly to catch flights and only making it in the nick of time. After passing security he would go to the toilet thinking "I made it!" so he associates the urinal block smell with a lower level of freedom. He thought it was cool so put it in the book. I guess it reminds Stankic why he's fighting: freedom from the Serbs/Yugoslav Army during the Croatian War of Independence and financial freedom for his family once his last assignment (Jon Karlsen) is completed.
Does anyone know the status of "The Cockroaches"? I saw "The Bat" was coming out in English and pre-ordered it (on a side note, a couple of the Harry Hole books have not come out in the US at all and I order them from the UK). I'd assume The Cockroaches will come out in English too and that they'll wait a bit after the The Bat has been out. I was wondering if anyone heard that The Cockroaches is coming out in English for certain.
Just finished The Phantom, what a fantastic read, just hope Harry isnt dead. After reading all the Harry Hole series I felt really sad at the end that he should be killed - just hope Jo has something up his sleeve.
Question> Did Harry take off his bullet-proof vest?? Faint heartbeat...rat could not 'get in' via the stomach; the too-round bullet holes in the jacket; blood appears to be round the neck, and on the head and not on the body (read the rat sections carefully...); the pervasive smoke particles, etc which would suggest the bullet rebound; the 'rebound' of the gun which is mentioned; etc etc. I don't think Harry is dead, it's a typical Nesbo trick that we are making assumptions on the basis of conclusions and emotions but which the words do not expressely confirm. Also, wouldn't the straight lawyer (Rakel's) make sure he knows where Harry is meeting the killer? What do you think?? Someone also mentioned that Martine was close.... but I'm not sure where that came from in the text (anyone?)
Just re-read The Redeemer to find the answer to the urinal blocks. I'm a bit disappointed to hear that Nesbo's reference was personal and not intertwined with the plot. Readers don't mind oblique references, but we don't expect the reference to be oblique...
I just stumbled across something on the internet about this just a few days ago. It said that "Police" will be out in English in the fall. Harry Hole #2 (The Cockroaches, written in the late 90's) will finally come out in an English translation shortly after that.
