Phantom Faces by Melissa Amen, 3 Aug 2004
By April May Rollins - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Phantom Faces (Paperback)
Phantom Faces opens doors to the past as Rebecca Collins and Ryan Dory travel back to 1875 to right a wrong - a curse placed on one of Rebecca's ancestors which has touched the lives of everyone in her family for over 125 years.
Guided by the spirit of Little Dove, one of Rebecca's ancestors, and help from Rebecca's sister (in the present 2003) Rebecca and Ryan arrive in Dover's Bend and will try to stop the curse before it happens.
Dover's Bend and its people have many problems already, so Rebecca and Ryan attempt to fit in by masquerading as a cousin to Gregory, the owner of the newspaper and the original target of the curse that was placed on him when he married Little Dove.
Through the many twists and turns of the plot Ms. Amen shows us the difficulties faced by homesteaders in 1875 Minnesota. How their lives revolve around their friendships. How they must rely on those friendships to survive.
The friendships Rebecca and Ryan make pull them apart, and sudden changes begin to destroy the love they had (their reason for returning to stop the curse.) Ryan is attracted to another woman and must decide if he will return to 2003 or remain in 1875.
As time draws near for them to stop the curse, Ryan finally makes his decision, but will it be in time? Will Rebecca be able to forgive him? Will they be able to stop the curse or at least reverse it? You'll have to read the book to find out. Enjoy this intense mystery.

MidWest Book Review, 29 July 2004

Rebecca Collins is deeply in love with Ryan Dory and she knows he is going to ask her to marry him.
Good news? Perhaps it would be, if it were not for the curse that was put on her family by a Sioux Medicine Man a century ago. Now if she marries Ryan, he will die.
How could Rebecca ever explain this to Ryan and tell him the only way to break the curse is to travel back in time? With this the story begins.
"Phantom Faces," I found, was a great read. I have read many romance novels and mysteries that tend to travel along the same roads, but this work added surprise elements which made it very enjoyable.
Why was a curse put on the family?
How were they going to travel back in time? And would they be able to break the curse and return?
All those were enough in themselves to make an interesting read, but the author added a surprise curve to the read that I thought was great. Ryan becomes romantically involved with another woman while in the past and the reader is wondering if he will chose to remain there with her. Has Rebecca lost everything by trying to right a wrong? Could she ever forgive Ryan for betraying her love? Nice surprise twist.
Phantom Faces is a mixture of many elements that make-up a great read. Mystery, supernatural and romance all woven into one. Well done Ms. Amen, I believe you have a winner.

A tale of mystery and intrigue, 11 July 2004

This review is from: Phantom Faces (Paperback)
In Melissa Amen's novel, Phantom Faces, she tells the touching story of Rebecca Collins and her fiancée Ryan Jefferson, a young couple who must break a hundred year old curse in order to get married. They're journey takes them back to 1875 when the curse was cast. A curse that haunts the Collins family for generations. They must do everything in their power to keep the curse from being cast, or else Rebecca and Ryan's marriage will be set to face the same fate as those before them.
Phantom Faces is filled with mystery and suspense. And you'll be eager to keep turning the pages of this steamy mystery to see if Rebecca and Ryan are able to do what no one else has been able to do. It is my opinion that Melissa Amen has written a story filled with intrigue and mystery. I recommend Phantom Faces to anyone who is looking to journey back in time for a thrill ride of a mystery. Keep your eye out for future books by this very talented author.
