one of the best books by a classic 20th century children's author. It's easy to think 'Ah, a good book about shape and tessellation: but it's much more than that. It's about fitting in, it's about striking out on your own, it's about growing up. His quirky and undidactic take on moral issues of friendship and maturation is finely in tune with the way children think. The writer Vivien Gussin Paley based a whole book on the way that the children she taught reacted to the work of Lio Lionni.

a wonderful book for young children to explore shape. A great activity after reading is to tear up lots of pieces of coloured paper and let children create their own characters similar to the ones in the book. A wonderful book.

Simply amazing 11 Sept. 2006
By Jessica Nichols - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I just recently checked out Frederick from the library with my three-year-old son. So tonight at the mall, when I saw this book at the bookstore, I was very interested in reading it.

I sat down and devoured it. Not only are the illustrations absolutely stunning in their color, form and emotion (especially when Pezzettino rows his boat to the Island of Wham), but it contains one of the single best lines I have ever read in any book (much less a "children's" book). I will not reveal it here, go read the book.

I have an English degree so I have come across many good lines in my day but this is one I will never forget. Maybe my three-year-old doesn't get the full impact of the book at this tender age but it matters not to me. At almost 36, I got goosebumps from its simple, amazing, message.

P.S. This is my first Amazon review of any kind of product after years and years of shopping Amazon. That is how moved I was by this book.

Leo Lionni's Pezzettino is Sweet 12 April 2000

Pezzettono is a lovely story about ones worth and acceptance. My son loves it. He chose it as his favorite book of second grade. He made a diorama to celebrate its message of self-discovery.
