Peyton Place is a 1950s melodrama, unusual perhaps in its more frank references to sex, illegitimate children and rape when compared with to other films of the same genre and period. But scratching just a bit below the surface is not much more than an up-market soap-opera. I liked the film, but I have to say that I doubt I will remember much of it in a few months. It's a slow paced story of seasons and changes told by a woman looking back on her last year at high-school, in 1941, the year Pearl Harbor was bombed and the americans entered the second world war. It wants to be a story of lost innocence but it's far too conscious of it to fully work. It was quite successful in its time, earning quite a few Oscar nominations, including 5 for the cast lead by Lana Turner and Hope Lange. As for the DVD it has no extras, but it does show the film in a very good copy, with wonderful colours. It's hard to know who I could recommend this film to. Most of my friends would be bored with its two and a half hours, but if you like the films of the period or melodramas in general (which you probably do, since you are in this page), I think you should go for it. Maybe you'll fall in love with it.

This is an interesting and well-made film that reminds us about the social taboos that ruled many people's lives until 50 or so years ago. It powerfully depicts the anguish and fear that burdened those who had broken those rules, even through no fault of their own. I can see how inflammatory the film (and the book upon which it was based) would have been in the 1950s as the story of a community, of seemingly morally upright folk, is gradually revealed to be a hot-bed of shame and hypocrisy. Though some of the moral standards expected of people seem dated, compared with today's more liberal attitudes, it remains a powerful film that dealt with difficult issues.

Fantastic, lush and romantic version of the well known novel. New England never looked more ravishing. This is a great print and a high quality transfer. They certainly don't make movies like this any more. Ideal for a wet Sunday afternoon. It's a shame that the Region 2 release has none of the splendid extras you have on this version.
