5.0 out of 5 stars Dorati records a 20th century Swedish classic 10 May 2002
I can remember listening to this then totally unknown symphony in 1972 when it appeared on the Decca label. I was stunned by the power & originality of the score. After wading through the rest of Pettersson's very disappointing symphonies, it is with considerable relief that I often return to this masterpiece.
Dorati conducts with his customary authority. The Stockholm Phil play superbly, in what is a very challenging score. The music is haunting & grips you from first to last, especially in the melting coda where the very high violins make a telling contribution.
A classic CD & a fitting tribute to a conductor who did more than most to bring new music to the attention of the public and who also raised the quality of orchestral playing of a previously second rate orchestra to front rank status.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Had No Idea 28 April 2013

Petterson's Seventh Symphony sounds like something Mahler could have written if he had really given full rein to all of his neuroses and grief. It is a continuous forty-five minutes of wall-to-wall anguish and dread, and at about the twenty-five minute mark is a heart-wrenchingly gorgeous string chorale that makes Barber's "Adagio" sound like the "Theme from Happy Days." I wish Dorati would have slowed it down just a few ticks, and by giving it a pulse, we aren't really forced to confront what Petterson is trying to show us. Absoulutely stunning.
