Not habitually a reader of such books, not a keeper of pets and therefore knowing nothing of vets, I was sceptical about reading this book when recommended by a friend. However, I found the book pleasingly compelling. The narrative flows smoothly and the reader moves easily through the chapters which are given a logical sequence by the threading of the vet's personal life through individual, mostly amusing, episodes in his professional career. I cannot comment on the characters or behaviour of the animals in the book but Welshman's human animals, ranging from confident colleagues through to frosty farmers, are clearly genuine despite their often idiosyncratic behaviour. Welshman's style is not demanding by requiring experience of animals and veterinary surgeries but does demand patience with punning, which is very frequent adding much to the extremely humorous narrative.
