4.0 out of 5 stars Several books in one, 30 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Petroleum Refining in Nontechnical Language (Pennwell Nontechnical Series) (Hardcover)
This is a useful, entertaining book which can actually be read in a number of different ways.

The first is as an entertainingly written, quick introduction to the business of refining. With a bit of determination, the book can be read quickly in a matter of hours, and the reader will emerge with an understanding of the core concepts.

The second is as a more detailed textbook. Questions at the end of every (short) chapter, with answers in the back allow the slower, more careful reader to test and deepen his understanding as he progresses.

And the third use is as a great reference tool, for use at those times when there is a niggling little piece of information you need but can't remember.

So, in summary, reading this will not equip you to build or run a refinery, but it is a great introduction/textbook/reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, 12 May 2008

The chap writes in an entertaining style, and goes over the school chemistry you need to understand refining. He explains the confusing jargon and abbreviations littering the oil business. Coming from a non oil background to work in a refinery, I have found it excellent.

Very well written, very informative, and very practical examples. While reading this book does not make one an instant petroleum refining expert, it certainly goes a long way to enhancing one's knowledge of the industry's fundamentals.
