Product Description

Book One in The Battle for Amel-Gar series

The kingdom of Amel-Gar is at war. And Amel-Gar's rulers seem to have forgotten that unpopular wars often spawn revolutions.

Aeons ago dragons reigned in Amel-Gar. Today, Ziane Kont controls the precious J-fuel necessary for the war effort, secretly extracted and synthesized from the underground bones and magic of J-mu and her dragon weyr, the greatest of their kind. Now the spirit of J-mu lives on inside Ziane, forcing her to morph into dragon form, a curse soon to be passed down to her daughter.

Nineteen-year-old Lana Kont is in love with Dallon Jaser, her freshman history professor. But when her mother orders his execution, mother and daughter are pitted against one another as they bend the pollution-based sky-haints to assume dragon form and wage war in the sky.

Corona is a half-haint, an incorporeal being in constant danger of slipping off this mortal coil. When she becomes involved with the revolutionary group, the Agony Underground, she is caught between Lana and Ziane in their struggle for supremacy―a struggle that could destroy Amel-Gar itself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gritty fantasy novel with an unusual setting 6 Jan 2013
By VikingS
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you enjoy reading secondary world fantasies that employ unusual settings (industrial/commercial in this case) while recycling well-established tropes in interesting ways, then this novel might be just your cup of tea. Marshall Payne does a good job of handling his large cast of characters, all of whom get a fair crack at providing our viewpoint into the gritty, smog-filled world of Amel-Gar. I particularly enjoyed spending time with Corona, a half-haint struggling to maintain her grip on the world, who comes equipped with a unique storage facility that proves central to the plot. Such inventiveness is typical of the author's shorter fiction, which is also available on Kindle. Much less typical is the rather strained quality of the writing. It's as if the author is trying a little too hard to convey his world's many weirdnesses in a vivid way. There's a lot of repetitive description, particularly in the second half of the book. I lost count of the number of times I read of "madder eyes". Still, this book is well worth reading. No doubt its sequels will reveal much more of the intriguing world that is Amel-Gar.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Original and Entertaining 9 Aug 2012
By Linda Steele - Published on Amazon.com

This isn't your mother's science fantasy novel. I got this when it was a free book and found it a funny, different kind of read. I absolutely loved the quirky characters, in particular the half-haint, Corona, and her partner in crime, Tranq. They had chemistry together and I would have liked to see a romance between the two, but the book is firmly focused on Lana and Dallon and the battle to save Amal-Gar. But what a fun, crazy ride it is. Payne throws away concepts around which other writers might build entire stories--or series, for that matter. Kovain engine and the infant in amber. Just sayin'. I read the novel as an allegory about industrial pollution and the industrial military complex, but it also flips the standard fantasy trope about dragons and gives it a nice spin in the form of the pollution-born sky haints. There's something ineffably sad about creatures that simply come into being and don't have a sense of self or identity. There are moments of deep pathos in this book, and also scenes of crude humor. I couldn't give it five stars because while I loved many characters, including Ziane, and loved the world-building, I thought Lana's story was less interesting than Corona's or Ziane's. That's not a big issue, though, when a book is as imaginative and fun to read as this one.
