it is hard to kick a man when he s down. as most people know graham lost his wife earlier this year but this book along with perhaps his last 3 or 4 is apoor effort from someone who was once a master of his craft.poor obvious ploting, weak characturesand a rushed ending. i suggest leave well alone and remember graham masterson for his early great gory masterpieces.

Whilst I agree with the majority of what b edwards said about this book I actually enjoyed it.
In what seems to be a follow on from basilisk we follow nathan underhill into the world of recreating mythical creatures for stem cell research.
This time he tries, and succeeds to create a phoenix for the purpose of using its stem cells for severe burns victims.
Our villain in this piece is theodor zauber, son of christian zauber in basilisk who has found a way to turn gargoyles from stone to living flesh.
Im not going to say anymore about the story line, I suggest you try it for yourself. Where I agree with b edwards review that a lot of the magic in grahams work has gone and the characters dont really get a chance to develop properly I think this is the best of his more recent works. I enjoyed reading it and found it very hard to put down, even if the ending was a bit poor.
Overall I think masterton fans will enjoy it, but not a starting place for some one new to grahams work. I would give it 3and a half stars but I cant so I rounded up to 4.
Good, but certainly not in his top ten or even 20 books, enjoyable but it wont stay in the memory for too long.

Sequel to BASILISK improves on it 4 May 2012
By KinksRock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I'm starting to notice a trend in my reading of Masterton novels, and I'm not sure if this is about Masterton or about me. I have not liked the first entry in his series, but have liked the second entry in those series. This is a consistent trend in the MANITOU, SISSY SAWYER, and now the NATHAN UNDERHILL series.

PETRIFIED is a better follow-up to the first in the UNDERHILL series, Basilisk. Again, Professor Underhill is engaging in incredible experiments to recreate mythological creatures that he believes really existed at some point (this time a phoenix), and he's up against a villain with similar goals (in this one, to bring back to life the petrified gargoyles that we see mounted on churches), but he doesn't go over the line this time in trying to make us go along with developments that are just too unbelievable, even in the context of a horror novel (in BASILISK, a guy volunteered to become a slug creature of some kind; it was just too much).

There's just the right balance of cop drama, scientific experiments, mythology, and Mastertonian gore. The only thing that Masterton's regular readers may note is missing is graphic sex, although there's some suggestion that it's happening "off screen" when the professor's assistant compromises herself so he won't lose his funding.

It's good fun. I recommend you skip BASILISK and just go straight to this one.

Some of Masterton's best books have been his series. My favorite is the Harry Erskine books, where Masterton works out his best uber Horror in the supernatural vein. Nathan Underhill has been introduced before, but the book is self explanatory even without a knowledge of his previous work.
This book brings together three streams of story that are not so far removed, but it takes a little bit of development before things take off ( in an almost literal sense). Underhill works on his project that can help with burns , but part of the way into the story he meets the son of his previous nemesis, and the main plot fires up ( as it were). The three threads intertwine in a brilliant way, and it is hard not to say much without saying anything about the key point. Suffice to say that this book has some classic Masterton moments ( not as extreme as THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT, but more like some elements, for example, in PARIAH). Fans of classic Masterton will, in my view, enjoy petrified, since it elicits the best of his mythic skills, and brings out more of his capabilities as shown in TRAUMA, aka BONNIE WINTER.
I will reveal that, I hope very much that this is the second of many books with Underhill. Masterton has a great formula here, and I hope very much that he brings out more of the style he created in PARIAH to combine with Underhill's special tone.
