The Petit Robert has long been the benchmark for French dictionaries. It's as complete as you can expect for a one-volume dictionary (if you want more, get the Grand Robert, in seven volumes). My only gripe is that the font is a bit small, but there's another edition - that they've only been making for a few years - in A4 size, which is a lot better if you use it frequently. Otherwise, unless you have very good eyes, get a magnifying glass. The Robert is more "literary" than other French dictionaries, such as the Larousse. If you read French literature, this is definitely the dictionary to get.

French equivalent of the Concise OED, this is ideal for anyone learning/studying French from GCSE onwards. Essential for looking-up vocabulary and some grammar it is worth the price as a resource.
