Review

"The books are superb in every way. The detail is precise and informative and the explanatory drawings are ideal." Robert C. "These books will capture the imagination of our future engineers." Colin Smith - Director of Engineering and Technology, Rolls Royce Plc.

Product Description

In Book 4 of this fascinating and educational series, Peter and Grandpa are faced with the coldest winter anyone can remember. How are they going to feed the animals when the tractor has frozen solid? The first construction project is to make a snow plough for the miniature railway. However the really big project for this book is making the watermill on the river. They then have to connect it to the house to supply free electricity. Of course there are plenty of adventures (and mis-adventures!) along the way and second daring rescue at the end. Grandpa also tells some more of his amazing-but-true stories from the old railways. 30 more watercolour pictures by John Wardle.

We bought the first in the series a few months ago for a train mad four year old James. The language is probably aimed at about 7+ but its a wonderful 'dad and son' type of book.

Having had me explain the working of automatic vacuum brakes (sucking up juice through a straw with a hole in it) this new book moves into waterwheels.

We love the mix of story and good technical explaination (I'm an engineer) and the local steam railway love a visitor who understands how things work (Tank (mentioning no names) engines do not float through abandoned mines....they sink!!). Looking forward to the next book, I feel it's time (author take note) for a solar generation system for when the river level falls.

My son now understands that electricity flows negative to positive except that 'daddy thinks it goes backwards'

Good for Grandson 16 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover
Purchased for a grandson who has been enthralled by the previous three volumes. He is 8 but his reading age is 11+. After reading the first two chapters at bedtime the remainder had been devoured under the sheets before morning. Not only are the stories enjoyed but the "how does it work?" is all understood and retained. As good for girls - his friends tell me - as boys.

For the past year, since discovering Peter's Railway, my three small grandsons hotly debated the storyline of the latest in the series. They were on holiday in South Africa when it was published, but I was tasked with making sure that they had a copy to give their dad for his birthday at the end of October. We wrapped the present as soon as they arrived back to stop the temptation to read it before giving it! And the wait was worthwhile. The disappointment that the title didn't relate to a waterwheel (from the clue in the Forgotten Engine) was eclipsed by their fascination with the new adventures of Fiery Fox. An excellent read-aloud book, the whole family (not to mention fellow passengers on a train trip to London) enjoyed the beautifully crafted story. Oh, and the waterwheel does become a reality! Will they be running a school service in the next instalment?

PS: Does Christopher Vine ever meet his readers? I know three small boys who would love to shake hands.
