Product Description

Product Description

This is book 1 of a fascinating and educational series. "Peter's Railway" is the story of a young boy who lives with his family in a cottage at the edge of his Grandpa's farm. It is a long way by road between their two houses and Grandpa does not own a car. So to make visiting each other easier, they build a miniature steam railway. They have some adventures along the way and use all sorts of machines and tools to help them in their great building project. In quiet moments, Grandpa tells Peter some incredible tales from the old times on the railways. The story ends with the grand opening ceremony with the first steam train running the full length of the scenic railway, through the fields, woods and past the river. The book combines the story with lots of simply explained technical information and diagrams. They are on pages at the ends of relevant chapters to avoid getting in the way of the story.

Both my sons (ages 8 and 11) were enthralled by the story of Peter's railway and how it is actually constructed. They are both train nuts and the younger one in particular has been poring over the diagram sections showing how cuttings are made and how other real-life engineering aspects are tackled. Would please all young train-lovers with a desire for practical knowledge of railway building, as well as those who just like a good steam-train story! A step up from Thomas the Tank Engine.

An excellent book for children who are interested in miniature railways. This is a story of a granddad working with his grandson to build a railway between their two houses over land owned by the Grandfather.

Gives a good insight into model engineering practices too.

Ideal as a Christmas present.

Fabulous book 9 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
My son has just been given this book for his seventh birthday. I am totally bowled over by it. A lovely story about the relationship between a grandfather and his grandson and how they build a miniature railway together. The author successfully intermingles a lot of facts about railway building within the story. The story is also laced with humour through anecdotes (and the GW)! Both my son and myself thoroughly enjoyed the book. Can not recommend it highly enough. The writing is superb and the illustrations are beautiful. I hope that one day my son will read this book to his own children. This book deserves to be a classic.
