1.0 out of 5 stars When I were a lad... 31 Dec 2011
By Mike

I bought these for a fancy dress party... and a bit of nostalgia. I must be getting old, because I'm starting to understand the sentiment behind phrases like "They don't make 'em like they used to".

When I had caps as a child (about 25 - 30 years ago), they made a massive bang when they went off and cap guns and bombs were outside toys becuase of this noise.

Not any longer: these are pointless. Loading these into my gun barely changes the sound it makes when you pull the trigger, and it's not a loud mechanism. If you're not concentrating, you only know the cap has actually gone off by the smoke, the smell (which, thankfully, hasn't changed at all!) and the occasioanlly visible flash. The gun, by the way, is an open cowboy-style revolver, not one with a hidden mechanism that might muffle the sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bang! You're Dead! 1 Feb 2011
By Furie
Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Okay, I'll admit that I didn't get these for myself, honest... I wanted my five year old to experience the joys of youth. One staple of a young boy's life should be the mild explosion and delicious smell of a fresh banged cap.

The only thing these are missing are the few penny sweets you got with the change from when you bought them at your local newsagent, before heading off into the grassy expanses of your childhood to shoot some baddies (and wasn't that always an argument worth having?)

Obviously you need a cap gun... Or a ten pence piece and a bit of hard board (I used the kitchen table, shhhhh, don't tell Mum). Reel out a length of caps and run the 10p along it and watch the sparks fly. It's exhilarating stuff, even 32 years away from my fifth birthday. The kids (5 and 14 (and 37) both thought it was fantastic. In the gun = winner. Watching Dad narrowly avoid burning his fingers with cries of surprise = winner.

You get two plastic tubes of tightly rolled caps. I have no idea how many there are, but plenty to give Clint Eastwood a run for his money.

Brilliant fun, and my kids now know how gunpowder works, how fantastic it smells and how to look cool in front of your kids ;)

Now, where can I get some Cola Bottles..?

Not any fun at all, non of the caps work when they are struck by the hammer of my gun. Not a bang or puff of smoke, they are completely useless.
I know they were not expensive but a waste of time and money anyway. I certainly would not recommend these to anyone, save your money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not much of a bang 31 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase
The smell is the same (from my childhood some 40 years ago) but the bang is lacking. Much less material seems to be used compared to the pronounced mounds of volatile explosive. Consequently many shots seem to miss rather than make any noise at all. Bit disappointed really. And they were for my son, not me.

2.0 out of 5 stars roll caps 19 Mar 2014

I know these things were louder when I was a boy and these were mostly more likely to make a small puff of smoke rather than the bang required of them. Feeling a bit paranoid I'm wondering if the paper type such as these have been deliberately reduced in their power over the years to push people towards the (more expensive) plastic caps and guns.

I've tried lots of caps for various guns, these are the best so far. Others are cut squint or too wide for the gun to even close. Read more

Look like caps, smell like caps but don't make a sound. It may be regulations but you might as well forget these and shout bang instead.
