Péteris Vasks - Viatore, Orchestral Works, CD
booklet writer: Klotins, Arnolds
conductor: Sne, Normunds
composer: Vasks, P?teris
orchestra/ensemble: Sinfonietta R?ga
Peteris Vasks is a composer with ethical and spiritual convictions. The ethical imperative of his works is that mankind must undertake responsibility for life on earth and for human spirituality. The destruction of nature - virtually the single universal problem of mankind - remains one of his essential themes, but has further developed to become transformed into a universal confrontation between good and evil, the spiritual and the material, between nature and culture, solitude and totality as well as between the worldly and the eternal. Vasks is a man of passion and frankness, and the contradictions of incompatible ethical notions are expressed in the emotional features of his music, which gives us an insight into a fantastic world of nature without borders and limitations.

Top Customer Reviews
The vivid and evocative string symphony "Musica Adventus" is an emotive and intensely bittersweet masterwork strewn with energized moments and pathos, suggestive of a cathartic journey of return. A searching work, both spirited and sad, complicated by testing passages of straining tension. Overall: wondrous, glorious, perhaps Vasks' greatest work.
"Viatore" is an introspective piece for strings which ebbs and flows repetitiously in a captivating way.
The "English Horn Concerto" rounds things off wholesomely (and enigmatically), offering folk influences, pastoral expanses, an abundance of perky and poignant expression plus the tinkling of a morris-dancer's bells...

The album begins with Musica Adventus, a string orchestra expansion of his brilliant string quartet number 3 which runs around 27 minutes. It is really one of the finest Vasks pieces I have heard in a while, kind of like a modern take on the Strauss Metamorphosis.
The second piece is one of my favourite pieces by Vasks, the brilliant Viatore. This must now be considered the defintive version. This piece, along with his Violin Concerto, are Vasks at his best.
The disk ends with Vasks Concerto for Cor Englese, another fantastic work that receives it second recording. This performance has been engineered better than the previous version and the playing is of a much higher calibre. I would have to recommend this disc as the first place one should when wanting to explore Vasks. I do have a minor quibble with the price, 26$ for one disc of music. Doesnt make too much sense but that seems how Wergo has been doing it lately[or maybe that accounts for the high production quality]
