I originaly bought the vinyl edition of "As Though It Were A Movie" in 1970. Over time it became a much loved part of my collection. What with one thing and another, i never heard Peter's first LP until buying ths very good for the price, two on one reissue. Credit to BGO, the label, for including the non LP tracks "Frozen Orange Juice" and "Aretusa Loser". Shame on them in equal measure for not including the non LP 'b' side of "Where Do You Go To My Lovely", called "Morning Mountain". Had they done so, this would be a five star release, as it is, it still rates a good four stars.
Musically, the two albums are very similar and sound as if they could have been recorded at the same time. This is a plus. The stand out track on the first LP has to be "Blagged". Definitely one of his best songs and an interesting counterpoint to "Take Off Your Clothes" from the "Movie" LP. The honesty of the lyrics on "Blagged" is refreshing. The rest of the first / debut LP is well worth hearing but to my mind, pales beside the greater strengths of the "Movie" LP.
On "As Though It Were A Movie", Peter really excels. From the opening strains of "Overture", that deftly weaves the melodies from several of his songs into one orchestral piece, the listener knows that something special is happening. It sounds like a cross between a James Bond movie soundtrack and something that Procul Harum might have produced. And I say that as a compliment.
The title track, "As though it were a movie" is THE song for which Peter should best be remembered, rather than the much more widely known hit single from his first LP, "Where do you go to my lovely". Not only does it have a great tune and equally good lyrics, it also has a great guitar part that utilises many of the then current vaguely psychedelic style of playing.

Great value for money, this double album contains completely re mastered versions of the original 'Peter Sarstedt' and 'As though it were a movie' recordings of the 1960's. Between them these two albums capture the creativity, style, imagination and off the wall humour that made Peter famous.
'Where do you go to, my lovely?' is still evocative of the days when there was a 'jet set', and the South of France was a genuinely exotic location. The excellent and witty 'Take off your clothes' is still one of my favourite tracks of all time, capturing the anatomy of a seduction in Sarstedt's inimitable style. Decide for yourself why it was banned in Australia! What could have proved so offensive to the nation that gave birth to 'Prisoner, Cell Block H'? Perhaps just the sheer style of the piece!
'As though it were a movie' still seems years ahead of its time, and is a complete experience in itself. Running from 'Overture' to 'The National Anthem', it is an entertainment in it's own right.
If you like Peter Sarstedt then this double C.D. provides over an hour and a half of music that is definitive of his work, and among the best of its genre.
Jaybee. 20 December 2000.

Classic 60's pop 30 May 2004
By Shmuel - Published on Amazon.com

In fact the second disc, As though it were a movie, sounds as if it could have been released yesterday, it doesn't sound at all dated as do some of his contempories listening to them 35 years later. As opposed to all the peace and love trippy music that most of the artists at the time seemed to be involved with Sarstedt wrote about life with all its bitter sweetness. The songs on this album are as strong and as original as any you are likely to find anywhere. He spices his sharp insights on life with a great sense of humour and varied musical styles, though all pop/folk/rock, excelently produced by Ray Singer (whoever he may be!)
The first disc contains the original "Where do you go to my lovely" and the second disc has as a bonus track the great "Frozen orange juice", one of my favourite pop songs from that period. I have another vinyl disc of Sarstedt called PS which is also very good, it's not listed here. It contains the song Beirut. I remember when I bought it I had a record player that let you repeat the record and I remember just letting side one play over and over again.

Blast from my past 8 Sep 2008

My parents had these record albums when I was a kid in the 1970s. I'm loving listening to the songs again, and hearing new things. It's a very "orchestral" approach to pop music, with slightly subversive lyrics. I wonder whatever happened to Peter . . .
