Review

'This Peter Pan is an exuberant, imaginative and often mean spirited narrative that scrutinizes humanity and finds it lacking... Loisel expertly drives the pace of the story so that his Peter Pan is never less than compelling.' - Times Literary Supplement

'Don't even think about skipping this one... This is a labour of love that truly deserves your attention.... Soaring Penguin have done a truly spectacular job collecting together and translating the full run of this Peter Pan prequel and it needs to go on your wishlist now....this is one of those rare books that gives you more and more each time you read it.' - Geek Syndicate

'The exuberant artwork is great fun, with neat shifts in tone between the shimmering beaches of the island and the gloom of London's alleyways... a rich and fantastical tale...' - The Guardian

'The exquisite repackaging of this extraordinary reinterpretation of the timeless childrens favourite is undoubtedly one of the most essential graphic novel collections of the year.' - Broken Frontier

'Loisel's Peter Pan knows exactly which questions need answering and squarely delivers.' - SciFi Now (August)

"Dark, discomforting and delightful... By taking the subtext out of the shadows and into the spotlight, Loisel's Peter Pan is infinitely more enjoyable." - Comics Beat

'Loisel s masterly Peter Pan (Soaring Penguin, £29.99) does for J.M. Barrie's fantasy what Wicked did for The Wizard of Oz by making us re-think the original and expanding what drives one Victorian urchin to make a wish for eternal youth and sanctuary his reality.' --Book of the Year for Paul Gravett

"Dark, discomforting and delightful... By taking the subtext out of the shadows and into the spotlight, Loisel's Peter Pan is infinitely more enjoyable." --Comics Beat

This Peter Pan comic is not for kids. Like Lost Girls and Peter Pank by Max this is an adult orientated examination of the famous children's character. Loisel has written a prequel to the book telling the story of Peter leaving London to become the boy who never grew up.

The book looks great with Disney-esque art but this is a dark tale of murder, neglect and a fear of adult sexuality. I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of others on this book. I probably like it more than Lost Girls or Pank but it isn't perfect. Some parts work well but some things are less functional.

Do not let young kids read this. Certainly not for children.

Dark and Adult. This an alternate take on the Peter Pan story. Bound in a nice friendly Hardback cover, within is a graphic novel of dark and adult themes but with terrific artwork and easy to follow storytelling. Many frames stand out with some being quite funny. An example of one is where a group of devil hounds are tearing at a chap's old chap.

It's an english version print from a French series from the 80's but looks fresh now in 2013.

If you like alternate takes on familiar stories this is a fine purchase and pretty good value for the money too.

I;ve had the first 2 volumes of this book for many years and had just about given up on ever being able to read the whole story in an English language version but here it is ! and well worth the wait. Stunning artwork and a timeless story - Books dont get much betteer than this.

I have appreciated Regis Loisel's prequel of James M. Barrie's Peter Pan story for some years. The art is dense and detailed, colors enhance the drama, and the story is largely understandable, though my French, she is not so good. Heavy Metal / Tundra began publishing this story in English in 1992, but then stopped after the first two (of five). Bummer.
Though I have all five French albums, as well as an oversize black and white collection with additional material, I was pleased to see the five albums translated into English and collected in this one book published by Soaring Penguin Ltd (June 13, 2013). I didn't hesitate to order a copy.
Be warned: While the cartoon art and bright color, depictions of Neverland island, and the pirate ship are closer to the Disney movie version than the illustrations of F.D. Bedford, Arthur Rackham, Mabel Lucy Attwell or Trina Schart Hyman, (I consider Alan Moore & Melinda Gebbie's sexually explicit graphic novel Lost Girls as exploitive trash and unworthy of serious discussion), the narrative by Loisel is dark dark dark. Peter is preyed on by perverts and abused by an alcoholic mother; his hatred of all things adult is understandable but fanatical. There is plenty of bloody death caused by Peter, Captain Hook, the crocodile and (spoiler alert) Tinker Bell!
