When KISS first formed, Peter Criss was sidelined as a songwriter. It was only after the band scored a massive hit single with Beth in 1976 that the band gave him a chance. His 1978 release is often lambasted by KISS fans as the worst of the four albums. I feel moved to defend the Catman here as the record is quite good actually. It was the first of the four I bought and I still like it to this day.

Like Gene Simmons, Peter brought all the songs that were unsuitable to KISS to the fore here. Unlike Gene, his material that was denied was actually worth listening to. The tracks are jazzy, inspired by rhythm and blues and pop. The best songs are That's the Kind of Sugar Papa Likes and I Can't Stop the Rain, but others like Hooked on Rock 'n' Roll and Easy Thing are fine tunes too. Most of album is fairly good without being truly memorable (apart from That's the Kind of Sugar Papa Likes and I Can't Stop the Rain) but is always worth a listen.

The album is so unlike KISS, that it becomes easy to hear why Peter felt moved to leave just two years after its release. Despite being knocked by KISS fans for years, the album is a decent offering, although I prefer his first solo album after leaving KISS (Out of Control).

I really like this. Of the four '78 Kiss solo's this and Gene's are my favourites. It's a mix of ballads, in the Beth vein, and good time rock n roll numbers. It's not really Kiss though.
