I was at this concert and it was very special.
Fans of Townshend will know that the apex of his creativity was the four year period 1969-73 when three double albums were written : Tommy,Lifehouse and Quadrophenia.Except that, having virtually completed the recording of Lifehouse,The Who were persuaded to edit it down to a single album that became Who's Next.Who's Next is obviously a marvellous album, but consider what got left out : Who Are You,Slip Kid,Let's See Action,Relay,Join Together,Pure and Easy amongst others.Who fans will have been able to re-assemble Lifehouse from the bonus tracks on Who remasters ( so why not release the album,Pete ? ),but this was the first opportunity to hear the work in its entirety.
This concert coincided with the issue by Townshend of the Lifehouse box set, including all of his original demos, new orchestral versions,a play and is a wonderful album. The concert featured a great band ( Rabbit,Chucho Merchan,Phil Palmer,Jody Linscott,Chynna )and an orchestra : they played the full work. For the first time, you got to hear the songs together and in context : Pure and Easy,Behind Blue Eyes,Bargain,Who Are You,Won't Get Fooled Again,Slip Kid,Mary,Relay and so on - some of the best rock music ever written. Because this wasn't The Who, there were more textures to the music, which was quiter and more reflective.
The DVD is superbly shot, the sound is great and if you care about Pete's music, you should buy this.
( And John Entwistle was in the bar at the interval ).
