Near perfect DAB/MP3 combination, 11 April 2006
This review is from: Perstel DR301 Portable Media Player ( MP3 Playback,Built-In Radio ) (Electronics)
If, like I was, you are looking for a personal DAB radio that you can also listen to your own MP3 tracks on, then this is a great buy.
It is very compact but has a large enough screen to show the easy-to-navigate menus and all the information from the radio show or music track you're listening to. The sound quality is very good indeed and I use it with some portable speakers in the kitchen as well as with the in-ear headphones it comes with.
There are three preset buttons for favourite DAB stations and others are reasonably quick to locate by accessing a list of presets. MP3 playback hasn't just been tacked on; it sounds good and has customisable equaliser settings and various play modes. You can organise tracks in folders using your PC where the device appears as a removable drive in Windows explorer when connected via USB.
The best feature, however, is the combination of rewind and record. If you miss a bit of info on the radio, you can hit the rewind button and it takes you back one minute (no more, no less!) and you get a second chance to hear it. The record button allows you to store radio in MP2 format on to an SD card. Using the rewind button means you'll never miss the start of whatever you want to record. The quality of the recording is not high, but not bad either... better if you use a high speed SD card so the manual says.
The price of the unit is good, but you should note the lack of a long-term power source and SD card. It is essential to purchase an SD card - if you want just a DAB radio, look elsewhere. You will definitely need rechargeable batteries, and might consider a power unit, which you can order direct from Perstel. Standard alkaline AA batteries do not last long with heavy usage - a few days with the amount I use it. Factor this in to the cost of purchase.
The only other drawback of the unit is the speed of writing to the SD card... I transferred 750MB of music (150 tracks) to it on the day I got the player and it took well over half an hour. But that's no big deal and I am delighted with it now it's set up.
Overall: fantastic

DR301: both good and bad, 16 Dec 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Perstel DR301 Portable Media Player ( MP3 Playback,Built-In Radio ) (Electronics)
In terms of sound quality, styling and use it is a gem. However, I was shocked by the battery consumption( goes through 3 Duracell Extras in 4 hrs.of DAB listening) and is often losing the signal as I move around outside. Don't think DAB was designed for portables since signal is all or nothing, whereas a standard FM radio just gets an inferior reception. Defintely need to purchase rechargeable batteries with this one and stay in one place when listening to it!

Great little piece of kit..., 8 Dec 2005
This review is from: Perstel DR301 Portable Media Player ( MP3 Playback,Built-In Radio ) (Electronics)
This is a great piece of kit. small, easy to use, sounds brilliant. The mp3 is great, stores plenty of my favourite songs, and they sound amazing.
definately worth getting, Whether you want MP3 with something extra, or DAB with extra MP3 capabilities, well worth it.
