5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 9 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Apparently the song that took DM into the "Big Time", even though most fans probably thought they were already there bearing in mind this comes after the Rose Bowl Concert. This maxi single is one of the best available, DM remixes range from just been extended versions to unrecognisable dance versions, the ones here are superb, the standard extended "Holier than thou Approach" to the total mix "Telephone stomp mix" which replaces the main beat with something different. Far better than the abysmal (Bass line and Rikki Tik Tik) remixes of Enjoy the Silence, and the B Side Dangerous is also here in two excellent forms and one not so good dancey version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Controversial and powerful 27 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
DM's greatest hit, and deservedly so. The stomping rhytm and the threatening guitar perfectly fit Gahan's bombastic voice, in a song that is equally perfect for dancing and listening. Many people were shocked by the religious imagery, but they didn't understand it was just a metaphore: the "personal Jesus" of the title refers to the role of confessor and "bringer of faith" that sometimes a man has to undertake in a relationship. While the metaphore may seem a bit daring and certainly pretentious (as confermed by DM's larger than life attitude at that time), it isn't a fault: it just reinforces the monstrous power of the song. The B-side is quieter, very sensual and fascinating: a forgotten DM gem. All the remixes of this single are recommended. Reach out and touch faith, boys: don't miss this one!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Personal Jesus:" the single that made me a Depeche Mode fan 11 Dec 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
One of the best songs in "alternative" history. Period. I first caught wind of it as a video on MTV in spring 1990. That distinctive musical hook reeled me right in. I had been aware of DM as a synth band for a few years before that and never disliked anything they did (though I'm still not overtly fond of the early work with Vince Clarke, frankly), but this bowled me right over, and I've listened to DM faithfully on radio, etc. ever since. However, not until my recent acquisition of a CD player have I rediscovered Depeche Mode, and the first DM CD that I bought was this Maxi-Single. This group is definitely a "singles" band. Their albums are very good, but the infinitely creative ways they remix their singles is truly impressive and cutting edge, anticipating the current "electronica" movement by a full decade. Each maxi-single is a mini-album of merit itself. The most impressive track on this single has to be the Acoustic Mix of Personal Jesus, showing that the band is much, much more than a synthetic one. And the B-side, Dangerous, deserved to be on the Violator album perhaps even more than other tracks actually on the album. Almost 10 years after it's initial release in late 1989, Personal Jesus (and its great remixes) is as classic as ever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Depeche Mode's best CD to date 9-9-99 9 Sep 1999
By timgullette@yahoo.com - Published on Amazon.com

I first procured and heard this CD in about '92. I was in rapture while listening to the Dangerous mixes. This is was not DM as I had been used to. If you enjoy sensual, psychedelic, house-beat music, I believe that you may find this to be one of the very best CDs that you ever buy. Music is not my life, but I was very dispondent when this CD got stolen from me in '94. I have searched a lot of music stores in the hopes of finding another copy, to no avail. I was extremely delighted when, on a hopeful hunch, I found that Amazon.com had it. Check the sample of track 1. Track 2 is even better. Enjoy. : )

5.0 out of 5 stars "Dangerous" is the cut you'll listen to over and over 24 Aug 2003
By Gordon Guillot - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Back in the day I bought this single CD after hearing on several occasions the "new tune" from DM I kept hearing in the Club. To my surprise I wasn't finding it off any new release. But it was a B side tune with Personal Jesus on a single CD? I guess DM didn't feel it was worthy enough. It's kinda euro house club sounding, puts you in a trance feel, I can tell you that the cut "Dangerous" will grab you as one of the best you'll hear from DM, I skip over Personal Jesus everytime.
