I'm surprised that no-one has reviewed this before: the disc came out in 2003.
Lynne Dawson gives a beautiful and intelligent performance of these Handel arias.
This disc avoids one of the real problems of Handel excerpt albums, which is that they can be curiously indigestible - each number is lovely but collectively it's all too much, with too little variation etc. The other problem with such collections is that the lack of context detracts from the meaning of the songs. To some extent that is unavoidable, but by good arrangement, and intelligent use of 4 short instrumental tracks (sinfonias & ballet movements from operas) performed by the stylish and sensitive Lautten Compagney, Ms Dawson's CD succeeds in holding the interest where others fail.
The other tracks are made up of 7 Italian opera arias, 1 Italian oratorio, 5 English oratorios and 1 English drama (Hercules).
This is one of my favourite Handel collections. I'm glad to see it listed in one of Mr Fitzsimmon's excellent and helpful lists.
