WD sentinel

Double-safe backup with RAID 1 technology

Set this system to data protection mode (also known as mirrored mode or RAID 1) and the capacity is divided in half. Half of the capacity is used to store your data and half is used for a second copy. In the unlikely event that one drive fails, your data is protected because it's duplicated on the other drive.

Maximum storage capacity with drive spanning

Out of the box, this two-drive system combines both drives into one big volume so they act like one drive for maximum capacity.

Complete out-of-the-box solution

WD's My Book Live Duo comes complete with two desktop hard drives offering high-capacity, low power consumption, and cool, quiet operation. The drives are factory tested within the enclosure for optimised performance and WD quality you can count on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of kit... 28 Mar 2012
Size Name:4TB
This is truly a fantastic piece of kit for the following reasons -

1. Setup is a breeze. I connected it directly to the gigabit port on the back of my Belkin Play Max router and it immediately became visible on my network (consisting of Alienware laptop with Windows 7, a Sony S390 Blu Ray, three WD TV Live boxes, an iPad, a Galaxy S2 and a Wii). You don't even need to use the installation CD and can access it's admin page directly from the web interface. Other than renaming the four default shared folders and creating two more (and changing it from a Raid 0 to a Raid 1 config), no other changes were required. The admin interface itself is simple and straightforward but gets the job done.

2. Read and write speeds were also very good. I have a large amount of content I wanted to move to this drive from my PC (1.4TB) whereby I have slowly but surely converting all of my CD / DVD & Blu Ray material to digital format for almost a year now. Write throughput is consistently between 40 and 50 Mbits (5MB to 6MB / sec) so file transfer is a breeze. I haven't qualified read times but as I have three WD TV Live boxes in my house I have set all three streaming HD content from the box without any delays or issues.

3. Finally looking at the Cloud services, again these are very straight-forward and perform as advertised. I have the WD 2go app on my Galaxy S2 and can access my box from anywhere at any time. Similarly using the Web WD2go service, I can also access my box remotely from any PC that has an internet connection and chose to map it as a permanent drive on that PC (which I have done on my work PC in the office). No advanced configuration is required on the network side (such as opening ports etc.). Once it is available on your home network, you can get into it remotely via WD 2go with a simply username and password.

This drive is both quiet and small (I knew the dimensions but was still surprised when it arrived) and you have an option to change the period of time before it goes into sleep mode. Even then, when a device tries to access it, the spin up time is so quick there are no connection issues.

The only minor complaint I have (and I know I am being unfair here) is in relation to streaming to my iPad or Samsung when either device is not connected directly to my own home wireless network. Although the cloud services allow you to connect extremely fast to the box remotely, other than browsing through your shared files, streaming isn't really an option. To be fair though this is not a limitation of the box but the infrastructure between your device and your home network. As the upload speed offered by ISP's is only a fraction of your download speed, I can see my files but even moving from file to file is laborious, not to mind actually opening them. I'm sure as our national fiber networks improve and offer greater upload speeds, this will only get better. If anything the My Book Live Duo is ahead of its time.

I'm only sorry now I did not get the 6 TB drive as when you have a lot of space, you tend to fill it faster!!

Note: I did allocate this box a static IP from within my router for convenience when I first connected it to my network which may (or may not) impact some of the above..

1.0 out of 5 stars I will never buy WD again. 23 Jan 2013
By Danny75
Size Name:6TB|Amazon Verified Purchase
Worked for 6 weeks before grinding to a halt, western digitals helpline was an absolute joke. After numerous emails and calls to them ( they're based in the US) I eventually managed to get a hold of someone. Rather than arrange a new unit they spent weeks via emails trying to give me quite complicated fixes via email, none of which worked. It was then suggested that I send the unit to them, I told them I didn't want to send the actual hard drives without having them wiped as they contained a lot of personal and business data. I'm still waiting to hear back from them months later. Never again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, after initial setup problems 26 Dec 2012
By J. S. Hardman TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Size Name:4TB|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This "My Book Live Duo" network drive very nearly got one star from me. Whilst connecting up the hardware was trivial, the setup program failed every time I ran it, with a runtime error. I was just about to give up on the whole thing, when Google found me this link -[...]

After downloading the files referenced on that web page, I managed to complete the setup successfully. Really not a good start from Western Digital, who I have always had good experience of in the past (over many years). Having to restart my PC as part of the install did not give me a good feeling either - having developed many installers myself, I am always dubious when somebody else's installer requires a restart, as it's the minority of cases where it is truly required.

I was not impressed by the Quick Install Guide either - any device that encourages the user to store all his/her data on it should make it abundantly clear how to set up security sensibly. It's not difficult to do, but I would expect the printed install guide to explain that.

Once setup, the initial backup process is very slow. That's not altogether surprising, although quite how slow it was did surprise me. The analysis of the nature of your files is slow and of dubious value - I'm not convinced that it's necessary before the backup starts - more something that should be done on the fly whilst the user is doing other things.

In later use, the backup and streaming processes are pretty good. I have the device set up to backup the entire household's data in encrypted form onto secure shares, with a public share for things that do not need to be secured, including any music, and public photos or video for streaming to our Smart TV or to our smartphones (using the WD Photos and WD 2go applications). Again, it's worth thinking about security when choosing what can be streamed, particularly by remote devices. It's also worth remembering the value of an off-site backup, in case you have a fire or flood. I use external hard-drives that I store at another location for that purpose.

When streaming to our Smart TV, there can be an initial delay, but after that performance is good.

All in all, after the initial setup problems, I'm very pleased with this device. It's a bit of an experiment for me, seeing how much value we get from linking together the various bits of technology we have. So far, it's been a novelty, but also reasonably useful. If this "My Book Live Duo" network drive were to fail, would we replace it? I'm not sure yet. Will have to see how much active use it gets...

Recommended, but with caveats - I had installation problems, and a number of other reviewers report hitting other issues.
