WD's My Book Live Duo personal cloud storage provides dual-drive shared storage on your wireless home network. Share data with all your computers, stream media to your entertainment centre, and get to your files from anywhere with remote access and mobile apps. And with RAID 1 technology, you have double-safe backup for your data.

WD sentinel
RAID 1 technology makes two copies of your data to make sure it's double-safe. Click here to see a larger image.
Double-safe backup with RAID 1 technology

Set this system to data protection mode (also known as mirrored mode or RAID 1) and the capacity is divided in half. Half of the capacity is used to store your data and half is used for a second copy. In the unlikely event that one drive fails, your data is protected because it's duplicated on the other drive.

Maximum storage capacity with drive spanning

Out of the box, this two-drive system combines both drives into one big volume so they act like one drive for maximum capacity.

WD's My Book Live Duo comes complete with two desktop hard drives offering high-capacity, low power consumption, and cool, quiet operation. The drives are factory tested within the enclosure for optimised performance and WD quality you can count on.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed 2 Jun 2013
Size Name:6TB|Verified Purchase
After about 10 months of use the drive started cutting out and shutting down. On 16th May I contacted WD Support after investigation they asked me to restore the unit to the factory settings. I had several recent backups of the data (40 years of photography) and restored the init and rebuilt the RAID1 setting.

Much to my horror it started cutting out and shutting down again as I was restoring the data indeed it corrupted thee image files.

Whether WD eventually get it going again I cannot trust the unit to hold my data. So I have cut my losses and bought a small desktop machine to stream media around our home network. It was up and running in less than an hour!

I should have foreseen this -- I bought two units at the same time, the other one failed fatally during set up and went back to Amazon by return for a refund. I bought one from John Lewis which has just done exactly the same thing with our music library.

Very, very disappointing

1.0 out of 5 stars do not buy this 20 July 2013

Size Name:4TB
this is an appalling piece of kit, it fails regularly and is almpost impossible to keep working, it constantly says it cant connect to the network even though everything else can, the western digital website is constantly unavailable so help isn't available. the WD Smart s/w that comes with it cannot access the drives.

I am currently in the process of rebuilding again (for the 3rd time) which means I lose my backup, and the shares arent available on the windows network so I cant even bypass the terrible software supplies

All in all this is the biggest waste of money I have ever found in 30 years of IT

1.0 out of 5 stars Wouldn't buy it again 6 Feb 2013
By Tinny
Size Name:6TB
Being attracted by the excellent price related to the large capacity and the brand I believed to be trustworthy, I bought this NAS with the purpose of using it to back up my most important files, and to use it as a Time Machine combined with My Mac

I had two problems from the beginning: The unit is exasperatingly slow even when connected via ethernet cable to my router, especially when access to a folder. From the moment you enter a folder that has many files inside to the moment they are listed, you wait for more than 1 minute.
Another problem: the hard disk suffers from insomnia. Despite the 'stand by' function activatecd, the unit continues to power up again and again every few minutes. The disc and the iMac are in the same room where I sleep and I assure you that you can hear it during the night.

But I come to the most serious problem. For months I have been using Time Machine for regular backups.
When I had to bring my iMac in for service to replace the hard drive, I was serene. I started one last Time Machine backup, I formatted the disk of the Mac and gave it to the assistance service.
Surprise ... Now I have a mac thant's reset and I can not restore the backup. neither with assisted migration nor with a full restore at boot.
From the Finder, I see the unit "-backup" of MyBookLive but I can not access, while on the other unit there is a folder "Time Machine" but has not the important file .Mdbackup inside, where there are all my documents, my pictures, my music.

I tried to contact support and described the problem in depth, the answer was in summary: "Try again, if you don't succeed, format it." Very useful.

I am very sorry for not having spent more and gone on the safe side with a Time Capsule.
Now I have an immaculate Mac and my most important files gone forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, after initial setup problems 26 Dec 2012
By J. S. Hardman TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Size Name:4TB|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This "My Book Live Duo" network drive very nearly got one star from me. Whilst connecting up the hardware was trivial, the setup program failed every time I ran it, with a runtime error. I was just about to give up on the whole thing, when Google found me this link -[...]

After downloading the files referenced on that web page, I managed to complete the setup successfully. Really not a good start from Western Digital, who I have always had good experience of in the past (over many years). Having to restart my PC as part of the install did not give me a good feeling either - having developed many installers myself, I am always dubious when somebody else's installer requires a restart, as it's the minority of cases where it is truly required.

I was not impressed by the Quick Install Guide either - any device that encourages the user to store all his/her data on it should make it abundantly clear how to set up security sensibly. It's not difficult to do, but I would expect the printed install guide to explain that.

Once setup, the initial backup process is very slow. That's not altogether surprising, although quite how slow it was did surprise me. The analysis of the nature of your files is slow and of dubious value - I'm not convinced that it's necessary before the backup starts - more something that should be done on the fly whilst the user is doing other things.

In later use, the backup and streaming processes are pretty good. I have the device set up to backup the entire household's data in encrypted form onto secure shares, with a public share for things that do not need to be secured, including any music, and public photos or video for streaming to our Smart TV or to our smartphones (using the WD Photos and WD 2go applications).
