Product Description

PERSONA is a method of contraception that works in harmony with your body.It works by monitoring the changes in hormones (luteinising hormone and estrogen) which control your cycle and identifies the days when you are at significant risk of becoming pregnant.

PERSONA consists of Test Sticks and a hand-held Monitor.

The Test Sticks collect hormones from your first urine of the day and process them into information that the Monitor can read.

The Monitor reads, stores and uses the information from the Test Sticks to let you know whether you are at risk of becoming pregnant (‘Red' Day) or free to make love without a contraceptive* (‘Green' Day).

Through its coloured Lights and Display Screen your Monitor tells you your contraceptive status.

How does PERSONA work?

PERSONA works by monitoring the hormones that directly control your cycle.

The levels of these natural chemical 'messages' rise and fall as they regulate the various stages of your cycle. This makes it possible to identify the days around ovulation when you are at significant risk of becoming pregnant.*

The Test Sticks collect hormones from your first urine of the day and process them into information that can be read by the Monitor. The Monitor then reads, stores and uses this information to let you know whether you are at risk of becoming pregnant ('Red' Day) or free to make love without a contraceptive* ('Green' Day).

The egg usually only survives for up to a day, however it is possible for sperm to survive for several days inside your body around the time of ovulation. PERSONA takes into account both egg and sperm survival times.*

During the first month of use, PERSONA will ask for 16 tests (day 6 and days 9-23) in order to build up a complete picture of your individual cycle as quickly as possible. From then on it will only ask for a test on 8 days of each cycle.

*Based on independent trials, PERSONA is 94% reliable when used according to the instructions and as the only method of contraception. This means that if 100 women use PERSONA for one year, 6 are expected to become pregnant as a result of sex on a 'Green' Day due to PERSONA incorrectly identifying their fertile days.

This is no means a new form of contraception ,has been around since end of the 90's .It is a quite boring looking white plastic unit not unlike a flip opening calculator with just a small LED screen with various symbols displayed. LCD readout and the choice of 3 possible lights displayed on the monitor upon opening the catch every morning. Amber days require a test stick , and then its either red and green.

The hand held device will then read urine sticks which come in packs of 8. Starter pack contains 16 of these, as that is how many the first cycle requires.(Most women will require about 4-6 sticks per month so always wise to buy ones with same expiry date and batch number as you are told not to mix batches in case of errors in the computer chip)

It programmes itself around you, to when your cycles are, pinpointing with laboratory accuracy, by a urine stick, if you have ovulated , and displayed therefore a light for the next 24 hours, red for unsafe sex days when you need a condom , and green light safe sex when you will definately not conceive according to the data it has gleaned into its memory as it gets to know you.

Drawbacks are- test sticks are expensive and it isn't fail-safe, citing 6 woman from 100 per year, will get pregnant because unit displayed " a green light by error" plus sticks are liable to expire as well if you do not use them by 'use by' date.

I have been using Persona for over two years. I love the fact it's 100% natural and it is easy to use. I have used it as a form of contraception and I have also used it to conceive as it will tell you your most fertile days. If you don't want to conceive then use a condom or other form of contraception on a red day.

I used this product for 5 years between 1996 and 2001 and found it to be extremely reliable - we didn't conceive. I come from a family of hyper-fertile women - one aunt even had her first four children in the first 3.5 years of her marriage. I was in my early 20s and studying at uni at the time, there was no way I wanted to risk falling pregnant. The pill really hadn't worked for me and other options were ruled out for various reasons. A friend's mother told me about the persona system and while my husband was skeptical, learning that this is what she had used to ensure she didn't add to her brood of seven, he was willing to give it a go. We stayed pregnancy free the whole time we used it.
It's not for flaky, forgetful types. Just like you ought to take the pill at the same time each day, so you should complete the test at similar times of day when the machine calls for one. Don't mix batches of sticks or use expired sticks. If you are the type that thinks you can chance things, this is one thing you really shouldn't. So if you're disorganised and forget to order sticks, then use an expired stick or skip a test, don't be surprised if the info the machine gives you turns out to be inaccurate. It's also a good idea to put some effort into being body aware and monitoring your own body's signals of ovulation.
I'm reviewing because I'm about to start using persona again. I would recommend it.

You don't need this kit to understand your fertility. It comes up with a green light when you are having your period and a red light during every other day of your cycle. Complete waste of money and very expensive. A bit of a con to be honest

I've been using Persona for about 4 years now because the pill disagreed with me and my partner hates condoms. This at least gave us a bunch of days per month when we didn't have to use them, he was very distrustful of it at first and we certainly weren't ready for children.

All the comments in the previous reviews are correct. You have to use it properly & you should definitely use it to get to know your cycle yourself.

I always ovulate around day 14-15, so if I weren't using the monitor correctly (I do sometimes run out of sticks and don't use it at all that month) I could assume that by day 18 I was safe. But the monitor shows that every so often that changes to day 19 for some reason and sometimes no egg at all.

I have had green days as late as day 11 but then ovulated on day 16 so could potentially have got pregnant. I tend to take the first green days after my period as cautious and listen to my body as well as the monitor. After the egg is gone, then I know we are definitely safe.

Four years on and no accidents, now married, we switched to using it to get pregnant and it worked on the first cycle..

It is expensive and you do have to think about it when you are staying at friends houses or away on holiday... But it's far better for me than taking the pill, and watching friends try in vein to get pregnant for months on end, I don't know why everyone doesn't use this, I recommend it highly.

Everyone is different, do your research and involve your partner in it. I've learnt a lot about my body from using this product.

I love this product and have been using it for years now. I would just like to mention that recently I changed its Duracell batteries to another brand and the device started giving me trouble. I called the helpline and they told me this device is made to be used with Duracell batteries, its internal clock might start missing a few seconds here and there if other batteries are used. You can confirm this with them. I have no reason to advertise Duracell, I use other cheaper alkaline batteries for many of my other home gadgets.
