Product Description

Review

'This volume … meets a need much felt by those who, after completing the grammatical study of the language, wish to tackle both the easier literary texts and to read the daily papers, and have need of a more convenient and more handy volume than those of the great dictionaries of Haim and the old but none the less useful one of Steingass.' East and West

'This vocabulary, though originally designed as a companion volume to Dr Lambton' Persian Grammar, is in fact an independent work. Its Persian-English and English-Persian sections are complementary and represent a practical, concise record of modern Persian vocabulary such as can be found nowhere else at the present time.' British Book News

Product Description

This work, a companion to Professor Lambton's Persian Grammar (also available in a Students' edition), is intended mainly for the student of contemporary Persian. It will, however, also be a useful handbook for those who wish to read classical Persian literature. The Persian-English and English-Persian sections contain a wide range of the more common words and phrases.

To be used with the author's "Persian Grammar." 15 Aug 2000
By Lee - Published on Amazon.com
This book is not intended to be used by itself, but as an accompaniment to the author's "Persian Grammar" and it must be considered in this light. Students or reviewers who are unaware of this may be disappointed.

Lambton's grammar is one of the two best currently available for Persian (the other is that of Thackston Wheeler). This vocabulary complements its exercises and readings.

Can never have been much good 10 Jan 2007
By Dr. Robert C. Oswald - Published on Amazon.com
Even the author said that this book was not a dictionary, but rather a vocabulary list for the university course she taught. And that was sometime in the 1950's, if I recall correctly. In addition, Cambridge University Press have a bloody nerv ceontinuing to sell this book after 60 or so years, and the recent editions are obviously merely a digital scan of the original typeset edition, with the Persian printing being quite atrocious and often illegible. If you want a great Farsi dictionary, Google Aryanpour (or Aryanpoor) or go to [...] and look for dictionaries by this author and published by Amir Kabir in Iran (at Iranibooks you'll have to register to navigate the site). These dictionaries are excellent, comprehensive, clearly printed, and buying from Iranibooks I have always received prompt delivery, no hidden fees, and secure payment through a US based site. My personal favorites are the Persian/English Pocket Dictionary, and the English/Persian Pocket Dictionary (Farhang-e Jibi... etc).

Persian Vocabulary 26 Jan 2004
By Corey Miller - Published on Amazon.com
The strengths of this book are its phonetic notation, size and reasonable choice of vocabulary. It's a lot handier than bigger dictionaries, but unfortunately lacks many words one comes across in newspapers, poems, etc. It's certainly worth owning!
