Product Description

Review

A worthwhile, enjoyable and instructive book. --The Times, 9 January 2009

Product Description

The land of the Iranians, known to European travelers for centuries as Persia, is a land riven by mountain-ranges, made inhospitable by deserts, yet rich in plains, forests and jewel-like gardens. Home to the most sublime architecture in the world, and a breeding ground for poets, Empires, Mystics and saints, it has an enduring and invincible fascination. David Blow enriches our understanding with his knowledgeable selection of the best of three thousand years of descriptive writing. He allows us to visit the courts of Cyrus and Xerxes, to ride out with the Parthians and Sassanians and to make a passing acquaintanceship with both the Shah and the late Ayatollah Khomeini, with Hafiz, and with Omar Khayyam.

Persian Gems 29 April 2009
Format:Paperback
I've just returned from Iran and was delighted that I had taken Persia:Through writers' eyes with me.The editor David Blow an authority on the country, has chosen a beautiful eclectic mix of writings from the earliest times of Cyrus and Xerxes through to the present. Iran is a modern country and is frequently in the news these days. This book greatly enriched my understanding and appreciation of the Persians and their rich culture.

I took Mr Blow's book with me on my trip to Iran. It added enormously to my enjoyment. I wish there was a similar book for all the countries I would like to visit. The book is divided up into chronological parts each with a very well-written history of the period at the beginning of the section to give you the context. In a place like Iran, history is so important. The subsequent writings give you a very good flavour of what things were like. Some of the pieces are quite magical and bring alive your own experiences, for example, Vita Sackville-West's turn of phrase capturing the emptiness of the landscape (viewed from the sanctuary of the desert oasis)"One is no longer that small insect creeping along the pitiless distances";or Lord Curzon's account of the night caravan silently looming out of the darkness. Should you ever stay at a remote caravanserai (which you may well do, some are now modern hotels), this will resonate with you. It is an absolute must for any tour of Iran. The only problem is that Amazon may not have it in stock right now- because I am about to snap up the last two copies available to send to my recent travelling companions...
