I took Mr Blow's book with me on my trip to Iran. It added enormously to my enjoyment. I wish there was a similar book for all the countries I would like to visit. The book is divided up into chronological parts each with a very well-written history of the period at the beginning of the section to give you the context. In a place like Iran, history is so important. The subsequent writings give you a very good flavour of what things were like. Some of the pieces are quite magical and bring alive your own experiences, for example, Vita Sackville-West's turn of phrase capturing the emptiness of the landscape (viewed from the sanctuary of the desert oasis)"One is no longer that small insect creeping along the pitiless distances";or Lord Curzon's account of the night caravan silently looming out of the darkness. Should you ever stay at a remote caravanserai (which you may well do, some are now modern hotels), this will resonate with you. It is an absolute must for any tour of Iran. The only problem is that Amazon may not have it in stock right now- because I am about to snap up the last two copies available to send to my recent travelling companions...
