Product Description

Product Description

Not one to rest on his laurels, Dave Weckl's 2002 album ‘Perpetual Motion’ sees the drummer/composer/bandleader expand the band's palette of tonal colours with the addition of a sizzling horn section and soaring background vocals, on selected tracks. Weckl's signature combination of torrential power tempered with finesse, and a flawless technique melded with an earthy, effortless feel, have made him a peerless percussive force in contemporary music. Drawing on the myriad rhythmic, harmonic and melodic worlds of jazz, rock, funk, Latin and world music, the Dave Weckl Band - a group of musicians whose collective virtuosity is matched only by their soulful expressiveness and expansive musical vocabulary - delivers music that is both fiercely creative and deeply grooving. Personnel: Dave Weckl (drums, percussion), Brandon Fields (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone), Gary Grant, Jerry Hey (trumpet), Bill Reichenbach Jr. (trombone), Steve Weingart (piano, keyboards), Tom Kennedy (electric bass), Hussain Jiffry, Sanjay Divecha (vocals)

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best 15 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Other great solo technicians of the drumming world have tried to make a decent record with a band, for example Dennis Chambers's Outbreak. However, Unlike The Dave Weckl band the songs lack the musicality and melodic, harmonic beauty. I think it is safe to say that Weckl's three previous band releases have climaxed towards this most recent record. Perpetual Motion is sheer brilliance. It is really nice to see how pianist Steve Weingart's and Weckl's compositional relationship has evolved since the last release 'Transition.' There is not only more of the same, for example tracks like the explosive, Latin 'Tiempo de Festival' but also evidence of new musical directions like track six with its 7/8 feel. It never ceases to amaze me how all the tracks can be so catchy, each with it's own perfectly created hook and executed to the highest degree. There are a few welcome additions to the band line up in the form of brass sections throughout and subtle vocals in track 2. Don't worry though it's still a truly instrumental experience as always. And what an experience at that. With each of the musicians being aloud numerous chances to showcase their individual virtuosity, this record is not just for Drummers. On the subject of drummers it seems that as Dave Weckl gets older he becomes even more incredible. His combination of terrific power, sense of musicality and mind boggling skill are still more than apparent. For Weckl fans this album is a must have and for fans of music in general the same applies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weckl is the man 19 Dec 2002
By John Bruzina - Published on
Format:Audio CD
I really dig Perp. Motion and like the fusion/latin stuff he's moved more toward. In a way, despite the added horns, some of this new stuff with the enhanced synthesizer presence reminds me of "Hard Wired" with Jay Oliver. The odd time jam (track 6)is cool, not to mention all his soloing over the bass/keyboards vamps throughout the CD. The final track blows me away. I would have liked to have heard a little more riding on his stacked mini-china on this CD as he has on past releases. Also, I thought parts of the opening track might have sounded cool if he "swung" the beat rather than riding eighth notes on the aux hi-hat..... but who the hell am I to talk??? The drumming is his best yet in my opinion, but I personally prefer the overall musical style of "Transition" just a little more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes!! Keep Doing stuff like this Weckl!! 19 Oct 2002

Man!This album is what I was wanting to hear from Weckl for so long!I like the dave weckl band stuff, but,I liked what he was doing back in his early days..(Aka. Master plan,Heads up).
I would be the minority, but I liked the heavy synth sounds, and
I also liked when Weckl was just being himself instead of mimmicking steve gadd.I know most would like the acoustic sound more, but I really liked the real Weckl!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD 15 July 2008
By Fred Eder - Published on
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As always, Weckl's drumming is exceptional. That goes without saying. What I enjoy about this CD almost as much, though, is the addition of Jerry Hey's incredible horn section on several tracks. They bring an extra juice to the album that, even if you are not a fan of Weckl, make the album an excellent purchase. You can also find the same horn section on Weckl's Master Plan CD, which I also recommend heartily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets better and better. 22 Jan 2007
By Kelly Murphy-Redd - Published on

I heard Multiplicity first, then Rhythm of the Soul. Now Perpetual Motion. Perpetual Motion just gets better and better every time I hear it. I love it! I think every Dave Weckl CD makes you appreciate his other CDs. You understand and "get" his music more fully. I notice more and pick out different songs each time. The music truly grows with each listen. It's hard to pick out favorites. I love Double Up and Overdrive. I think his daughter's voice on the beginning of Child's Play has a very clear sweetness about it and is appropriate to the song. Dave Weckl just keeps getting better and I look forward to all the days ahead.

So good! I love Dave Weckl beyond doubt. In fact, one of the reasons I bought this CD was because of his song, Tiempo de Festival! Amazing drummer.
