Born in Ohio in 1953, Jim Jarmusch left his hometown at the age of 17 for New York City, where he was accepted into NYU’s prestigious Tisch Film School, despite having no prior film experience. After early critical acclaim for his debut Permanent Vacation (1980), Jarmusch wowed critics with Stranger than Paradise (1984), winning the Camera D’Or at Cannes: the award for Best First Film. The iconic Down by Law (1986) completes this first Jarmusch box-set from Optimum and stars musicians-turned-actors Tom Waits and John Lurie (Lounge Lizards) – who also contribute to the soundtrack. The epitome of laid-back cool, Jarmusch works time and again with the same bunch of eclectic actors, musicians, artists and technicians, producing work of distinct visual and narrative appeal that, with these films earned him first a loyal cult audience, then subsequent international acclaim and box office.

I watched Down by Law back in the eighties and loved it, so it is a joy to have it on DVD. It is the tale of three down on their luck men who end up in prison, escape from prison and that is pretty much it. The three are played by John Lurie, jazz musician, Tom Waits, legend, and Roberto Benigni. Although they are all good, the film really belongs to Benigni who is superbly off kilter and droll. This really is a very funny film. If in doubt, check out the 'I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream' scene on Youtube.

The film also boasts some lovely cinematography and a very New Orleans/Tom Waits score. I watched it with my family who are certainly not art film buffs and they all enjoyed it. I would caution that it is slow to start, so persevere, it is well worth it.

Stranger than Paradise was recently selected as one of the most stylish films of all time, I've just watched it again, I saw it when it came out. It is of its time and timeless in its way. It shows Jarmusch refracting Wim Wenders through his own sensibilities. America, well New York, Cleveland and Florida are treated to Wenders-esque spare photography in splendid black and white film stock left over from Wender's own State of Things. The film was clearly made for tuppence hap penny by about a dozen people. There is a hint of the humour that was to come with subsequent Jarmusch films and a hint of profundity and pathos. The overall feeling is of bored hipsters mooching about. It is richly reminiscent of being somewhere else, with no money, with someone that does not particularly want you there. It does remain intensely stylish, and the spare music by Lurie and the recurring "I put a spell on you" by Screaming Jay Hawkins fit the mood perfectly.

The thing i love about these 3 films most are the lingering shots of the most run down parts of america. These are the places you probably never get to see as a tourist there and im sure the locals wouldnt recommend them to you either and being shot in black and white seems to only enhance the bleakness of some of these places and yet these arent bleak films, How is that ? Jim Jarmusch has certainly forged a style all of his own and i will be honest in saying that these films will not be most peoples cup of tea for sure. For those who are more inclined towards independent cinema and tend to like the sort of films that dont always follow a linear narrative (what some may call pretentious art house but in this case would definitely be missing the point) This 3 disc set will be right up your street, Although im pretty sure everyone would enjoy down by law............

I was looking for 'stranger than paradise' which was quite hard to find on its own, but here it is together with two other great titles in what I call a bargain deal.

Jim Jarmusch is one of my favourite directors and so what a boon it was to discover the offer from Amazon: a 3 CD collection of Jim's films. I wanted to get his film at a good price. They came swiftly and without any problems.
