Product Description

A practical manual for marine model makers who choose to build their historic model ships using a kit. Beginners and intermediate modellers are particularly catered for, but older hands will also find much of interest. From the moment the first thought is given about making a model ship, this book takes the builder through all the various stages of the project, from kit selection through construction; the pitfalls and how to avoid them. Much of the myth and mystery is taken out from what many consider to be a tricky subject, and the language and terminology is simple and explanatory throughout. 100 photographs support important steps in the text and these will provide the model maker with the encouragement to go on and enjoy the construction of a wide range of period ship models. - Choosing your kit - Adhesives, Finishes & Fixings - Tools, Maintenance & Safety - - Research, History and Accuracy - Building the Basic Carcass - Hull Planking - - Deck Planking - Wales and Rails - Stern & Quarter Galleries - Gun Ports - - Deck & Hull Fittings - Guns & Rigging - Ships' Boats - Masts - Yards & Spars - - Sails - Standard & Running Rigging - Kit Manufacturers & Available Products -

Every period ship modeller should own this book, especially novices and intermediate modellers. It contains a wealth of information that makes it an indispensable reference work.

The emphasis is very much on how to do things and problem solving, often using different approaches to the same problem. Whilst the author presents solutions he also positively encourages experimentation and innovation, stressing there is no right or wrong way. A wealth of diagrams and photographs provide ample visual examples. My only gripe is with the poor printing of the ten or so colour plates, although even this doesn't detract from the overall quality for me.

Some of the material in this book appears to be recycled from the author's other works but it's none the worse for that as this book is set out more logically, making it easier to follow and quickly find exactly what you're looking for.

This work should inspire confidence and revive interest in the hobby in all who read it. It certainly made me want to start another model straight away.

Realy a great book,

I think its a book every one who builds historical model boats has to own this one. And once you one it you will look into it verry often.

Its not a book that tells you how its has to be done, but how it can be done because everyone has its own way in making something good and perfect. Keith Julier simply helps you in a way wich I find verry usefull.

When reading you wil notice that he is not only someon who is verry cappable in explaining things in a understandeble way, but he also knows where he's talking about.

The writing is clear, end its easily to understand although it isn't a book for dummies, no its a book for everyone.

The pictures are good, but some of them may have been a little larger.

Its more then worth its money, so youre a ship builder and you create wooden historical ships, then why isn't this book on your book shelf??

As others have said, this book contains lots of very good information but sadly every single printed image is such poor quality it spoils the book. All the drawings and photographs in this book need to be updated/retaken. I bought my copy on the recommendation of others but would not have given it shelf space if I'd actually seen a copy first. If you are thinking of buying this book make sure to have a look through it first!
