Book Description

1 Jan 2007

A classic Christie.

Read by Hugh Fraser, who plays Captain Hastings in the popular TV series.

Nick Buckley was an unusual name for a pretty young woman. But then she had led an unusual life. First, on a treacherous Cornish hillside, the brakes on her car failed. Then, on a coastal path, a falling boulder missed her by inches. Later, an oil painting fell and almost crushed her in bed.

Upon discovering a bullet-hole in Nick’s sun hat, Hercule Poirot decides the girl needs his protection. At the same time, he begins to unravel the mystery of a murder that hasn’t been committed. Yet.

About the Author

Agatha Christie was born in Torquay in 1890 and became, quite simply, the best-selling novelist in history. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, written towards the end of the First World War, introduced us to Hercule Poirot, who was to become the most popular detective in crime fiction since Sherlock Holmes. She is known throughout the world as the Queen of Crime. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. She is the author of 80 crime novels and short story collections, 19 plays, and six novels under the name of Mary Westmacott.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent audio book 1 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
On holiday Poirot and Hastings meet young Nick Buckley, who has had four near brushes with death in the last four days. Poirot deduces that these aren't accidents, but deliberate attempts to murder her, drawing them both in a complicated case as they try to figure out who the murderer is and why they might want Nick dead.

This is an entertaining and well-written story, with the twists and turns you'd expect from Christie. Hugh Fraser is, as always, an excellent narrator, thanks to his own pleasant reading voice and his ability to provide a number of different voices for the characters and bring them to life. Even though it has a running time of over five hours, this held my attention throughout.

Thorough enjoyable and highly recommended.
