Book Description

1 July 2008 Performance Portfolio
Honda was for a long time regarded as the maverick of the Japanese automobile industry because the man, Soichiro Honda, and the company he created, Honda Motor Company Limited, seemed to plough their own furrow and to some extent ignore what their rivals were doing. This attitude led to a total rethink of what a motorcycle could and should be and having conquered that world, moved into automobiles with the quirky little Honda S360 sports car and T360 mini-truck. Why not? After all, nobody else was producing such vehicles and Honda reasoned that there was a viable market there. After the flourish of the S600 and S800 roadsters and coupes through the 1960s it seemed as if the idea had died at Honda because they were not followed up by a successor and it would be 30 years before the next affordable sports car. Today those early Hondas are very rare and collectable vehicles. Things began to stir again after Honda had developed the NSX. Honda decided the time was right so it displayed its SSM concept car at the 1995 Tokyo Show that conceivably indicated Honda's interest in a new generation of sports roadster that would proudly wear the stylized H badge. As you would expect the production version of the SSM, the S2000, was full of the advanced thinking that had typified Honda's early years. It featured an X-box frame of immense rigidity, fully independent suspension system and an engine mounted behind the front wheels to give a near 50:50 weight distribution. The engine benefited from Honda's achievements in Formula One and other racing successes with its alloy castings and VTEC system; it developed an amazing 240bhp at 8300rpm with the redline set at 9000rpm and yet weighed just 326lbs. In the burgeoning international roadster market the S2000 from Honda has reset the benchmarks in the bang for your buck arena. Top speed was in the vicinity of 150mph while the classic 0-60mph dash took just 6.2 seconds. The close ratio six-speed gearbox had a rifle-bolt-like shift and was perfectly matched to the engine's power and torque curves. Handling was racecar-like in its precision, the S2000 was everything that buyers would have expected a new generation Honda sports roadster to be. The S2000 has remained untouched in appearance although there have been some minor tweaks to its mechanical specifications with adjustments to the power output and curve and gear ratios to improve its driveability at more sedate speeds. As they say, When you're onto a good thing, stick to it! Included are road tests, new model intros & performance data. A total of 120 pages all in full colour.

.... but a useful guide, fine for the price and about all there is on the subject right now. It was a contributing cause to my spending several thousand pounds though!

This is quite an interesting book but is mainly just a rehash of motoring magazine reports. There is some historical information but not a lot

1.0 out of 5 stars Just a bunch of magazine article reprints 1 Jan 2009

I preordered this 120-page softbound book based upon the glowing description from Amazon to give to my husband, who is an owner of one of the first S2000's in the US. We were extremely disappointed in the book because it doesn't cover any new ground -- it's nothing more than a compilation of reprints of magazine articles that have been written about the car (Car & Driver, Motor Trend, Road & Track, Car South Africa, Motor Australia, etc.). Since we already had most of the original pertinent articles, it wasn't worth the price.

The description never mentions that it's just retreads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for S2000 fans, current owners and prospective owners. 30 Dec 2008

This is a great resource for S2000 fans. The book is essentially a collection of all the magazine previews and reviews of the S2000. The book overs the original S2000 (2.0 liters) and the upgraded 2.2 (S2200?) but barely touches on the CR model. The reviews are from car magazine outlets mainly in the United States and Europe though other continents are represented.

You can read what the automotive press has written about the car, view the various road tests, and read the numerous comparisons with other cars in the same class (mainly the Boxster, Z3/Z4, and Mercedes SLK).

I wished the book had more information on the S2000's development and transformation from concept to production. It would be nice to have original interviews with the designers, concept drawings and focus on evolution of the "S" lineage in Honda.

However, this is a great buy and I would highly recommend it to any S2000 fan.

The book is roughly 120 pages and all the articles are in full color.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast Car - Faster Delivery 10 Sep 2013

This portfolio of reprints is a giant step from the Brooklands books I uses to order in the 70s. It's in full , HD COLOR! Since when? There does seem to be a disproportionate number of articals from those magazines from parts of the world that persist in driving on the "wrong" side of the road. Therefore the frequent shots of RHD S2000s. To compensate for that minor disorientation the reader is distracted with the humor and charm of the British word smiths. Always a jolly good show. This book came to me via The Garage Book Cafe in Hickory NC. The book was shipped out from The Garage within an hour of my order and arrived in a thick walled envelope, undamaged in four business days. Amazing!

Now that our cars are out of production, this book will sky rocket like Dan Carney's book, but who knows? It's fun to read the non-US reviews that weren't published in the states and it's got a couple of comparos as well. Totally worth it for $20.
