4.0 out of 5 stars good science 16 Dec 2012

Excellent book and great to learn about the contemporary science of the sport, a good resource for creating your own training plans and understanding why.

I'm a bit dubious of the statement at the end of chapter 8 on sprinting: "Newtonian mechanics [...] will argue that ['throwing'] does nothing to advance the bike over the line"

F=ma and the bike weighs much less than the rider, so relative to the combined CoG the bike will move forward more than the rider moves back, and it is the wheel that counts. As long as the lunge is in the last fraction of a second, the benefits must outweigh the stated increase in aerodynamic drag and reduced power input at the pedals. Accelerating the bike is much easier than the rider.
