Product Description

Book Description
Your life is coasting along when suddenly you learn that your child has a genetic condition that will completely change their life.
How should you feel;what do you do;how do you tell them? What about your other children? How does a family manage to live with this knowledge?
This book recounts one families experience of living through this situation. It is honest, sometimes emotional, but practical and uplifting. A powerful story to inspire

From the Author
Every day in the UK countless families are told that they have a child or children who have an inherited genetic condition. The repercussions of this news are like the ripples in water, they spread and grow wider and wider. As a parent you think and feel many things; often you fear that you are not normal and that perhaps you are going mad. You suddenly face the challenge of explaining difficult medical facts to a child. Is it possible to help them come to terms with such news, and still be happy? How can you help them live fullfilled lives? What about siblings, how will they feel? How can you prevent your family falling apart. I do not have all the answers, but I can share our experience with you.
I have written this book as a parent who is living through this experience in the hope that in reading it you can appreciate that whilst it is not always easy, that you can still be happy, and most importantly that you can also beome stronger and learn some valuable lessons that will enrich your life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!, 2 Aug 2006
By Lance Mitchell (Hampshire, UK, Northern Hemisphere, Planet Earth) - See all my reviews
This is the astonishing personal account of the courage, determination and perseverance of the author as she battles her way through a life that has more than its fair share of obstacles. The main subject of the book is the plight of her daughter, Krystie, who has been diagnosed with Friedrich's Ataxia, a crippling and life-shortening genetic illness. However, from childhood, Molvia has suffered occasional family tragedy and near-tragedy.

When Krystie is born, Molvia's instinct and previous experience tell her that there is something amiss. The medical experts think that they know better, but they are proved to be wrong. As Krystie grows up, this is a pattern which is often repeated. Molvia researches all the possibilities and analyses the best path for her daughter.

Krystie becomes as determined as her mother. She insists on as much independence as possible and succeeds at home, socially and at school in the face of adversity. Her awareness of her condition strengthens her resolve to milk every drop of positive experience out of her life. She has probably already achieved more in her life than people who are three or four times her age.

Whilst reading this book, I was reduced to tears on more than one occasion. These were not tears of sadness but of joy as I shared Molvia's pride in Krystie's achievements.

Molvia's account is interspersed with Krystie's own versions of events and is nicely rounded off with the recollections of one of Krystie's elder brothers.

There are some tiny discrepancies in the chronology of the account, but this just proves what the reader already knows; that Molvia is human.

You must read this book. Whether you are living with genetic illness in your family or not, you will be inspired and filled with great hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly Flawed is Perfectly Done!, 31 Aug 2006
By Patricia Brandon (USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Molvia and Krystie Maddox have gratiously allowed the reader to closely examine the very real trials of such a debilitating disease as Freidrich's Ataxia. Even more importantly, mom and daughter allow us into their personal lives as their thoughts and feelings, weaknesses and strengths - are shared in a most poignant way, so that we might also benefit from their experience. Thank you for such a courageous and positive outlook on life!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read, 1 Aug 2006
It was my pleasure and privilege to interview Molvia Maddox for the Daily Mail about her new book Perfectly Flawed. Her daughter Krystie has a serious and life-shortening genetic illness but both she and Molvia are vibrant, lively and uplifting people. Molvia's book is beautifully written and a real page-turner, as it is a very honest, moving account of her struggle to be a good parent against the odds. I thoroughly recommend it. Becky Sheaves
