After almost imploding under the pressure and demands of delivering tour after tour of their previous record Antenna (an album they didn't especially like but the public loved) Hydrahead records allowed Cave In as much or as little time they needed to produce their next record. At times nobody was sure they'd be another record.
Thankfully Cave In produced this. A mixture of brand new material grounded in the kind of aesthetics that made Cave In want to play music in the first place, and older material released only on limited edition E.P's Perfect Pitch Black sounds almost like an introduction as well as an expansion to Cave In.
Of the older material on this album "Down the Drain" is the one that blows my mind the most. Distancing from trademark Cave In riffage and harmonics crossed with blood curdling screaming, "Down the Drain" is a beautifully layered piece that instantly takes you on the songs journey. Apparently is was the band attemting to write a song that sounded like My Bloody Valentine, which is reason enough to buy this album right now.
The rest of the album doesn't disappoint but is more like classic Cave In... chugging guitars, uplifting soaring vocals, thrash breakdowns and wonderful differences in time signatures and rhythm compartments.
Simply awesome

cave in have had their problems and most of them were regarding motivation in recent years, the band were lacking hunger and drive and the problems with record labels and the split with their old screamcore fans and the newer fans who were drawn to their more space rock sound, etc and etc and etc.Perfect pitch black is the album they had to make to release their demons and as it happens its an album that delivers the goods.

its a mix of unreleased songs and songs that appear on hard to get eps,it stays away from the venomous riffs and insanity of their early work but is heavier than antenna and is one of their most catchiest albums and thats saying something.

after the brief intro world is in your way kicks in and what a song, full of strong riffs, melodic singing and experimental moments.off to ruin and the world class trepanning follow, and its clear this is band that are simply enjoying themselves for the first time in years and in trepanning we hear cave in with more metal singing than screaming but it shows there is bite in the boys still, down the drain is extremely experimental and delves into psychadelic moments that will certainly leave you spinning but its an extremely memorable song with a chorus that angels would sing along too!the album closes with the startling screaming in your sleep and i assure you that this song will visit your dreams as you sleep. While it cant be said that this is a brand new cave in album it can be said that this is a brand new cave in,a band that needed to feel alive again after all their trouble, the heart has certainly not stopped in the cave in body!

As has been said after almost imploding after an acrimonus split with RCA comes this album from Cave In. This is quite simply like nothing you have never heard before. Gone is the over production of Antenna (which is still a good album in my book) and has been replaced by a band who are angry and just want to make music again.

Well worth you money, if you want to listen to a few tracks go to http://www.perfectpitchblack.com/ and you can hear snippets of the album!

I loved Antenna and really hoped that this album would be as great. Sadly the vocals on the first few tracks are very different, lots of screamo and the melodies are basic. From 5th track onwards it improves but sounds more like b-side material. If you thought Antenna (2003) was a slice of fried gold, avoid this release.

Whoever you worship pray thanks to them for this CD. It appears the Guys have had a hard time lately & they seem to have channelled all their energy & emotions into their Songs - The density & complexity of which is staggering.

The Reviews pages here on Amazon are littered with praise for Bands whose success is disproportionate to their talent and I have another one to add to that ever growing list. Reference points are minimal as I suggest Cave In possess a sound & style of their own and exhibit this most tellingly in the way their Songs evolve & digress from their initial order.

In conclusion - You will not be disapointed if you seek a fresh sound and as Gerald the Gorilla said the production is superb.
