Book Description

1 April 2006
If you open your house to strangers, who knows who might come in. And what they might be after. Or whom. Now, ponder the unthinkable and surrender to your darkest dread, as sinister storyteller extraordinaire John Saul weaves a heart-stopping tale of lurking terror and twisted intent.

Every parent’s nightmare becomes reality for Kara Marshall when her daughter, Lindsay, vanishes from her bedroom during the night. The police suspect that the girl is just another moody teenage runaway, angry over leaving behind her school and friends because her family is moving. But Lindsay’s recent eerie claim–that someone invaded her room when the house was opened to prospective buyers–drives Kara to fear the worst: a nameless, faceless stalker has walked the halls of her home in search of more than a place to live.

Patrick Shields recognizes Kara’s pain–and carries plenty of his own since he lost his wife and two children in a devastating house fire. But more than grief draws Patrick and Kara together. He, too, senses the hand of a malevolent stranger in this tragedy. And as more people go missing from houses up for sale, Patrick’s suspicion, like Kara’s, blooms into horrified certainty.

Someone is trolling this peaceful community–undetected and undeterred–harvesting victims for a purpose no sane mind can fathom. Someone Kara and Patrick, alone and desperate, are determined to unmask. Someone who is even now watching, plotting, keeping a demented diary of unspeakable deeds . . . and waiting until the time is ripe for another fateful visit.

By JK TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
Perfect Nightmare was originally published in 2005. The book runs to approx. 386 pages and is an easy read. Shouldn't take you to long to get through it.

What's it about?. The mystery begins with a disappearance. Teenager, Lindsay, goes missing from her bedroom during the night. Did she run away because of family trouble or was there something more sinister?.

Saul builds up a troubled family history and slowly injects light, psychological tension. It appears people are disappearing from a series of houses recently put on the market for sale. Might that be the link to Lindsay?. I'm not telling you!. As the search for the missing continues to build, two unlikely people draw closer together while a darker character stalks the neighbourhood.

Perfect Nightmare isn't a great story. It's a decent story and fine if you're looking for a more gentle thriller with some decently worked tension and eeriness. If you like your fiction 'hard boiled' you'll be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty average story 16 July 2014
By Minimoo
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
John Saul has definitely written better novels, this, for me, was pretty average. I also didn't realise, as another reviewer has commented, that this is a re-release so I'm pretty lucky I haven't read it before or I would have been a little disappointed.

The story itself doesn't gather any real pace until the end, it kind of plods along mainly between the thoughts and feelings of Lindsey, her friends and family, and the madman, who, I must admit, I found to be quite obvious - though his reasons for doing what he does, not so obvious until the end.

For the current price of 99p, if you're a fan of this genre or John Saul it's worth a punt.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special 29 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This took too long to get going, in my opinion. I was getting bored but was hoping something would get my interest up any minute now. When it did it became more enjoyable, but really there was nothing special about this book at all, and, unusually for me I was quite pleased when it ended. An ok story but it felt like something I'd read before or a B movie I'd seen. Would probably work better as a film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be better 25 July 2014
By Marie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book but a little more suspense and horror would have been welcome. I found the voice of the killer a little stilted and not really dread inducing. Worth a read but instantly forgettable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Nightmare 17 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Not a patch on the usual John Saul novels of the 80' s. Easy reading but seems you have read this kind of novel once before. Think I will remember his Nathanial and Cry For The Strangers a lot longer than this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect nightmare. 25 Aug 2014

Format:Kindle Edition
Unsettling idea for a thriller which will certainly make one anxious about open house if selling a home. Maybe too many twists in the end that do not all come together convincingly .

An excellent horror/ thriller with some good central characters. With a good twist that you don't start to expect until quite close to the end.
