If you haven't come across H.R.F Keatings Inspector Ghote mysteries in written form then you are missing something.
This is a Merchant Ivory production of Keating's first Inspector Ghote story. It take place in Bombsy and concerns a murder that isn't quite, a stolen ring, diamond smuggling and a Unesco official.
The film follows very closely to Keating's original with the exception of the addition of the diamond smuggling and the stolen ring (the ring is a single rupee in the book). Other than that and a change of character's name, this book is remarkable true to the original.
Now why do I say it's a bit shaky in places?
Simply because at times the makers of the film can't seem to be able to decide if there's to be a humorous element to the film or not. Some of the scenes have accompanying music which would be more at home in a slapstick comedy and I found this detracted from the scene for me.
Overall though this is a most enjoyable film. The actors play their parts well and seem to convey a genuine enjoyment for their respective roles.
Well worth a viewing either before or after reading Keating's original story.
I'm happy to say that, unlike many book to film translations, this one stays true enough to the original to make it highly entertaining.
