After suffering horrific facial burns when the bomber he is piloting is shot down, Hugh Fleming (Havers)'s once promising future lies in ruins. I wonder if any heros are perfect. However the title aside this is a remarkably watchable well scripted and produced piece of "Faction" docu - drama. The late Geoffrey page, himself a badly burned Battle of Britain participant was the technical adviser and for once the producers have heeded knowledge of the "expert" rather than let truth get in the way of a good story.

The story is drawn heavily from the real life and remarkable Richard Hillary who was a very good writer as his book "Last Enemy" demonstrates. Reading this will help understand the difficulties people like our perfect hero "Hugh Flemming" faced.

Many "stars" are in the cast and Nigel Havers is perfectly cast, as is James Fox as the "plastic surgeon" who physically and mentally put these chaps back together. Bernard Hepton admirably plays the stiff upper lip Father, exercising his authority over "Mother" with typical politeness of the era.

If I have one criticism - and it is hardly that - it is the comparatively gentle portrayal of the horrific injuries these young men suffered - and the degree of pain - the mental and emotional traumas. Notwithstanding I think it came across sufficiently, Unlike many productions today which do nothing but encourage our immunity to mutilation and suffering.

I would hope then that this production will appeal to a large cross section of the community, as well as the mature of mind.

Loved this. Tells the story of a real Battle of Britain pilot who became an ace, was an aesthete and popular with the society debutantes of the day, charming and a long-haired university rowing "Blue". Richard was part of 603 Spitfire Squadron in the Battle of Britain shot down and nearly killed, horribly burned he suffered terribly in recovery and had many operations with the East Grinstead Burns hospital, becoming one of the famous pioneer "Guinea Pigs" as they referred to themselves with humour.

This DVD film of all the tv series episodes is brilliantly played by Nigel Havers and adds to the books The Last Enemy by Richard Hillary, that became a best selling classic and also the other two books on him by Lovat Dickson and Michael Burns. Superb, funny, moving, the scenes are realistic and the battle scenes too. It is also a good series contained in 1 DVD package and unlike others requires no further outlay for further purchases. Well worth the money and also a good story, well acted and appealing to the whole family. Not just for enthusiasts. The flying scenes with Spitfires and Ray Hanna are worth the price alone. Buy It! Very moving story, beautifully and convincingly acted. This well crafted series is as much about the physical and psychological struggle to overcome adversity and personal trauma as it is about war heroics. Order today!

I found the main character self obsessed and very narcissistic and but the story is interesting and worthwhile watching.
Good support characters
