Product Description

Is there room in the Church and in society today for a faith that takes the Bible and traditional teaching seriously but not literally? Or that sees Christianity as a developing tradition with its share of mistakes but one which still provides people with the best framework for encountering God and living a fulfilling life? This book is written in an accessible style out of a deep love of the Church and the traditions and scholarship that have enriched it. Brian Mountford sets out a liberal Christian position that is biblical, open, liturgically conservative, traditional, ethical and concerned with Christian action. In the clash between liberalism and fundamentalism that bedevils the Church today he is always on the side of critical theology, real religion, and poetic language about 'deep truth'. He believes in the reality of God but finds him 'in the wound rather than the bandage'. For those searching for a credible faith this book is the perfect introduction to the best that Christianity has to offer.

'Liberal' is not a word I enthusiastically choose to describe my Christian faith because it is open to so many criticisms, but it's hard to find a better one. Read the first page

I really liked this book. It seems to me to be a sane, reasoned and balanced approach to Christianity. And with real sensitivity and passion. That comes through in the many illustrations from his minisitry in Oxford amongst students, academics and visitors. It also comes through from his own personal experiences.

I think if you are fed up with biblical literalism, fed up with a faith which is out of touch with 21st century life, fed up with a faith that cannot be questioned and cannot cope with doubt and failure, this book will give you new hope and a new perspective on the church. Indeed if every parish had a vicar like Brian Mountford, the church would be in good shape.

I have been looking for a long time for a book that takes a realistic, unsentimental view of Christian faith, and this is it. It makes Richard Dawkins arguments seem less powerful. Basically it relates the idea of God to modern thought and modern living. As a result I have actually put my foot into a church again.

I was expecting a reasoned set of arguments here, and at least expected to feel better about reading a liberal book on apologetics than an evangelical one. But no: I was just as disappointed, angry, and depressed by this as I was by Nicky Gumbel. Mountford's view of Christianity is slightly less nasty than Gumbel's, but it's just as irrational. He makes simple errors of logic, such as appeals to nature, loaded questions, and wishful thinking, as well as not addressing fundamentals such as the historical (or not) nature of Jesus, and whether truth matters, and how you should arrive at truth. Ultimately, Brian lives in a different kind of dream world to Nicky Gumbel, but it's still a dream world. He has poor reasons for belief in God, doesn't declare good reasons for picking and choosing what to believe, deals with theodicy by assuming an impotent God, and his reasons for choosing Christianity are the same as Gumbel's. I give this one mark higher than Gumbel for omitting the threat of eternal damnation and being nicer (if still slightly condescending - at least he realizes it!) to non-Christians. If you must live an irrational life, then this is the kind of irrational life to live, but I think humanity deserves the dignity of assuming that it can rise above faith and superstition.
