A thirteenth-century legend - a truth that some would kill for . . .

Product Description

When a woman is burned to death in Grandal Field in Devon, it seems like a case of mistaken identity. Until DI Wesley Peterson learns of a legend involving a French woman who burned to death there in the thirteenth century. And when he discovers that records of a previous excavation on the site have vanished, and that two archaeologists involved in that dig died in tragic circumstances, Wesley starts to investigate the possibility of a link between the legend and recent events. But edging closer to the truth brings unexpected danger to Wesley. For the truth echoes a story of twisted love and obsession from many centuries ago - a truth that almost costs Wesley his life . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Archaeological murder & mystery, 24 Jun 2009
By

A woman is burnt alive in a deserted field in Devon. The murder has echoes in the past when a woman was burnt alive by her husband, who suspected her of being unfaithful, on the same spot in the 13th century. An archaeological dig has just begun on the site before a new housing estate is built, & the developer's wife has received death threats. A group protesting about the influx of holiday home owners are suspected of being involved in arson attacks on holiday homes. D I Wesley Peterson investigates the links between these events & another archaeological dig on the same site 20 years before that ended with the mysterious deaths of two of the archeologists involved. This long-running detective series combines modern day mystery with a historical subplot. Fans of Time Team will also enjoy the archaeological plots which are a big part of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brands for the burning, 3 Oct 2011

(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Wesley Peterson and his wife Pam are on a well deserved break in France when they meet Ian Rowe who was at university with Wesley. He asks for Wesley's help because a young woman he has been corresponding with has disappeared from her home in Devon. Wesley is reluctant to get involved but having seen print-outs of emails that Ian has received he becomes more interested especially as Ian appears to have left his home without telling anyone where he was going.

When Wesley returns home he find discovers that a young woman has been burned to death in the same place as a young French woman is supposed to have been burned to death in the thirteenth century. Put that together with a sinister group of people who are threatening second home owners in the area and Wesley and his boss, Gerry, have more than enough to keep them busy without checking where Ian's correspondent has disappeared to.

This is a frightening story with its images of burning to death and persecution of innocent people because of their faith. Then Ian Rowe turns up again and Wesley starts to wonder what's really going on in the area and who is hiding secrets which may have a bearing on the unknown young woman's horrific death

I thought the book was well written and there are enough twists and turns in the plot to keep most readers guessing until almost the last page. I like the way the police characters are developing and I like the way the modern crimes are linked to crimes which happened centuries ago. Even minor characters come to life on the page. I thought the way Sir Martin Crace was portrayed was excellent as was the developer of the site which Neil is excavating. This is an excellent series and I would recommend it to anyone who likes their crime stories with complex plots and believable characters and motivations.

I have read most of Kate Ellis' books in the Wesley Peterson Series. I look forward to each new title, hoping that it will be as good as the last one. So far I have not been disappointed. Wesley Peterson makes a very believable detective.
