Again, I find it astonishing with music critics and A&R folk that Claire Martin is not held in the same esteem as Norah Jones, Diana Krall and all those supermarket jazz babes. She is a better singer than any of them, is very attractive and knows far more jazz licks than all of them put together. Maybe that's it ........Claire is TOO jazzy for the mass market. Well it's everyone's loss, because this is a superb album full of jazz versions of pop tunes that Claire has chosen herself; and its a very accessible but eccentric selection (John Martyn's Man at the Station anybody?) that is heavy on melody. This should have reached all the Radio 2 and Michael Parkinson listeners that Krall & Jones aspire to - but sadly Claire hasn't got that sort of marketing support. Her A&R guys should be ashamed of themselves.
My instinct says Claire probably doesn't mind too much because she is a true jazzer, and wants honesty and integrity in her music. You can see that by the beautiful but personal arrangements on this great record. Please....if you have a Jones, Krall, Peyroux, Ella or Dinah Washington album anywhere in your collection, then buy this. She's a Brit in an American domain, but she carries this off with aplomb. Great voice and great tunes. Please treat yourself.
However, Celine Dion fans look elsewhere - try the shelves at your local Tesco.
