weird and wonderful 20 Dec 1999

Any description that focuses on just words or music is going to miss out on just how exciting the SNZs are to listen to. There really is something for almost any taste (OK, they don't do Gregorian chant) - the songs are instant classics, you can't believe you don't already know them.

Perennial Favorites fuses traditional jazz with Asian and Eastern European sounds (check out the beginning of "The Ghost of Stephen Foster" for the segue from Indian to Klezmer to jazz and back). You can find just about any musical influence you care to look for (calypso in True Macaque): the words are just as wide ranging (and who knows what was slipped into the SNZs' drinks to make them come up with "If we were made from cellophane we'd all get stinking drunk much faster"?).

I've played this frequently for 18 months now and it's still in my top 10 favourites. And at least 4 of my friends have gone out and bought it too. And - a bonus - the US edition has one of the best-produced packages I've seen - a facsimile of a Victorian gardening manual. Go figure.

SNZ is an incredible group and Perennial Favorites is - in my opinion - their best album. All the others are great too but this is something special. The music swings across Europe and Asia and Middle East - occasionally dancing through all those in one song.

Listen to the "Ghost of Steven Foster" if you are having a bad or boring day - that's the kind of a song that could literally raise dead.

I am already going through a second disk - the first one was played more often than technically possible (by me and friends) and it looks like I might need to order a third copy...

Joy of life - pure and undiluted. Rare thing.

Bought this CD on impulse, never having heard this group before. I thought they would be like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, who I really like, but it is very different. It is the quirkiest album I have ever heard! Love it!!
