one good and one not so good, 18 Aug 2008
This review is from: Perdita: AND Raven's Honour (Regency Lords and Ladies Collection) (Paperback)
I finished reading both these books this morning. To make it easier I'll review one after the other.
Perdita: Started off promisingly then (and like most of its genre) descended into tired cliches and some truly, truly terrible writing; fainting damsels, 'hard and dominant men', and a plot that did its best to be interesting but eventually keeled over at the side of the road done over by its own boredom. This equals 1 star.
Raven's Honour: Again started off well, characters interestingly drawn and though despite the above cliches; powerful men and admiring women it managed to pull together a respectable story. The unusual background of the Napoleonic war and suffering of the soldiers and soldiers' wives was a large contribution to this. A definite 3 stars - and I am sorry that its review has been dragged down by its sister companion.
After all, we read historical romances for the history as well as the swooning do we not? Perdita told me nothing I did not already know. Raven's Honour made me curious about further exploring the war and life of the men and women who suffered during it.

I agree with the above reader, tho 1 star is a little harsh. The second story is the better one, but both are historical enjoyable.
