More About the Author

Nick Butterworth was born in north London in 1946 and grew up in a sweet shop. As a boy, he always loved drawing and had an insatiable appetite for stories, two passions which have continued into adulthood. After a conjurer made an appearance at one of his birthday parties he also developed a fascination with magic. (His own prowess as a conjurer was called into question by his daughter, just before her eighth birthday. "Dad, you're not going to do your magic at my party again this year, are you?" she said.)
On leaving school, he worked as a graphic designer and in 1970, he formed his own consultancy with three others, including long time friend and fellow author Mick Inkpen who, "joined the studio during his gap year and just, sort of, stayed."
In 1980, Nick decided to concentrate on illustration. His first book for children, B. B. Blacksheep And Company, was published the next year. His first writings for children appeared in the Sunday Express Magazine in the shape of a regular feature called Upney Junction.
With the advent of breakfast TV, he became a regular presenter on the TV-AM children's programme Rub-a-dub-tub, telling stories and illustrating them live.
Nick's books, have sold over twelve million copies around the world in more than twenty-five foreign languages. They have featured frequently on short lists and won several prestigious awards, including Nick's favourite, The Nestle Gold Award for The Whisperer.
Percy the Park Keeper, who accounts for some seven million of Nick's total sales, first appeared in 1989 in One Snowy Night, and has been the subject of a series of animated films for television. Nick is now a partner in a production company, Snapper, with the aim of producing high quality animation for children's television. Nick's Q Pootle 5, a little alien character, is in development.
Nick lives in Essex and is married to Annette who is also a writer. They have two grown up children Ben and Amanda and two grandchildren, Harry and Thomas. Nick feels very much at home with children of all ages. He enjoys visiting schools and book events whenever he can. He has also gained a reputation as an entertaining and inspirational speaker at more grown up conventions and gatherings of parents and teachers etc, and is a frequent speaker at major book festivals such as Edinburgh, Cheltenham and The Hay.

Amazon Review

When Percy the Park Keeper emerges from his workshop after three whole days of banging and crashing and tap, tap, tapping, his friends are more than a little surprised when they see what he has been up to for all that time. Instead of the bird table or a park bench, he has built an amazing new lawn mower, consisting of a sofa for him to sit on and a fan to keep him cool when he is working. But what Percy has not realised is that his latest contraption can actually fly, and before long he is hovering way above the park with all his friends on board...

Nick Butterworth fans will be delighted by Percy's Bumpy Ride for many reasons, not least of which is that for the first time EVER Percy actually leaves the park, hovering in the sky and looking down on his kingdom from above.

A suspenseful adventure story filled with fantastic surprises that will have young readers squealing with delight, Percy's Bumpy Ride is a must for anyone who has previously entered Percy's little world, will introduce new readers to life beyond the park gates, and would make an ideal gift for any young reader. Percy's Bumpy Ride is a favourite of both my 3 and 5 years olds, as well as the one among the series that I most enjoy reading to them. This story breaks free from the bounds of the imaginative and touches fantasy as Percy's new mower leaves the ground to fly over the countryside. Magically, all the world seems caught up in the dream flight, as a flock of sheep forms messages to the party above and ends up saving the day. A great read especially before bedtime.

Like all Percy the Park Keeper books, this story is warm and gentle, with beautiful illustrations. Percy decides to make his own lawnmower to cut the park grass more efficiently, but perhaps shouldn't have added the helicopter-style rotor blades... There is plenty of humour in here - for children and adults - and a flock of helpful sheep provide a happy ending. My 21 month old son loves this and wants to read it again and again. You can't go wrong with Percy...

My 5 yo son asked me to get this after we'd read The Rescue Party. I didn't think this was quite such a good tale, but the illustrations are great and provide plenty to talk about at storytime.

As always Nick Butterworth gives us another Percy the Park Keeper classic. I have been buying Percy books since my nephew was little and he is 17 now! But now my son (age 5) and daughter (nearly 2) love him too. An exciting story illustrated with wonderful illustrations. There is laughter, adventure and of course Percy animal friends including Badger, Fox, Hedgehog and Owl to keep children and adults alike entertained.
