5.0 out of 5 stars A successful outcome for a reluctant pirate in this story, 18 May 2008

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
from the `Usborne First Reading' series of books, written especially for children who are learning to read.
This particular book is LEVEL FOUR.

From the back cover:-

`Percy Pike is hungry, very hungry, but his fishing trip runs into trouble.
First his boat sinks...then he's captured by pirates.
Can Percy escape before he`s forced to walk the plank?'

48 high quality shiny pages in the popular 2-page spread format.
Numbered pages. Beautifully illustrated throughout, further enhanced by relevant expressions. Complete with kingfisher blue ribbon bookmark!
Clear easy-to-follow-text , enhanced in places for effect and with some speech bubbles.

Example of text:-

`Percy Pike and his family lived on a farm by the sea.
They spent all day working in their tiny field.
But here was never enough to eat.
Early one morning, Percy came up with a plan.
He took a long branch, some string and a nail.
Then he put hem together and made.....
...a fishing rod.
"I'll catch some fish and surprise everyone," he thought.
Percy rowed around the bay.
He put a worm on his hook and started to fish.
Percy waited .....and waited....and waited.
He got so tired of waiting, he fell asleep.....'
And when Percy wakes up, some hours later.....with wet feet, things go from bad to worse, as he hops on board a pirate ship with a simple motto:-

`We steal for Crook `cos he's the best
Then put the treasure in his chest.'

But, all is well that ends well, and after er...... shall we say....a daily reduction in the pirate crew and some satisfied sharks(!), Percy rather cunningly gets revenge on the evil and greedy Captain Crook!
